now that i think about it my favourite book genres are fantasy, romance and thrillers. with fantasy, i especially look for political intrigue. actually no, i need political intrigue because you're creating a world but i know nothing about the socioeconomic factors that govern it?? there are kingdoms and governments but i don't know how they relate to one another? what their ideals are, and more importantly the ideals of the people? also want action, heavy themes and creative world/magic systems.

with romance i'm more partial to romantic thrillers (tlatm comes to mind) with action and suspense, or adventure and fantasy - not to be confused with fantasy fiction because the plot sometimes may have a romantic subplot whereas in this, the romance is the plot - (mead mishaps for example), but i also adore romance with unconventional plots, and god, ANGST. give me the longing, the self conflict, self hatred, love as acceptance, love as a weapon, love as sacrifice. i like my romance to hurt. i want to feel RAW after reading it. also why majority of those 'spicy books' (spicy according to whomst??? my mutuals are writing filthier shit than that 😭 get real) that are overly hyped on that clock app don't do it for me because smut is always ten times hotter when there's an undercurrent or an overcurrent - i just made it up idc - of angst woven through it. the tragedy of them being together for only this moment and committing to memory everything about their lover's body because they know that they're doomed or that they know something is going to happen. trying to make the moment last because it's all they have? that's that good shit right there.

and i also enjoy the quiet romance. just watching these two characters slowly fall in love, slowly discover themselves and discover who they are and also who they are to each other.

and as for thrillers, i need suspense. i need high stakes. depending on your premise i also need violence. idk what that says about me but if you're setting your shit in the criminal underworld but no one getting offed or beat up, and there's no showing, what are you doing. how you telling me so and so is a crime lord but all they do is walk around posturing. like i need to feel that, and feel the urgency.
