Aleksander was bringing out Alina's dark side. The one she kept hiding out of shame and fear. It's essential to acknowledge that you have one but the author never allowed her to come to terms with it. And Aleksander was the only character to accept it about her.
On the other hand, Alina was bringing out Aleksander's human side. The one he (almost) lost through the centuries. He didn't think he still had it until Alina stirred it. And just like Aleksander symbolized her dark, powerful side, she symbolized his light and humanity.
It's just a dynamic of contradictions. They both also avoided admitting it. The irony is that the narrative kept trying to convince the reader that these sides of them were wrong (in Alina's case) or they simply didn't exist (in Aleksander's case). And by doing so the author tried to strip of these two characters one of their core characteristics.
maybe i'm dumb, maybe i just missed the cues, but... i feel like for people who haven't watched the original, season 1 of NuWho should have clearly stated that 9 was the first Doctor after the Time War.
because i honestly thought the Time War had taken place hundreds of years ago for the Doctor, that all the previous versions had also lived with all that trauma and guilt. (because i had always heard that the Doctor was "the last of the Time Lords", and i thought that had always been an essential part of his character, yk?)
and i just found out that i was wrong after finishing season 1. and that honestly makes me kinda sad, because now i understand 9 better. and i feel like i could have gained an even deeper understanding of the character, could have appreciated him even more, if i had known.
that he was basically a walking fresh wound. that him meeting Daleks was right after he lost his entire species because of them. that him picking coward over killer was right after, if my understanding is right, he had to choose the other option. after he had to let his people die.
am i the only one who made the wrong assumption?
