St5 turning into a queer love story was not on my 2025 bingo board
Foxy has grown on me a lot & I do like him as a third wheel now that I’ve come around in all my rewatches but I still find it really funny how much he does NOT matter ultimately in the same way Spaulding did or even the same way more minor family members like Tiny mattered. And that’s not a criticism it’s just canon. Baby & Otis tolerate & appreciate Foxy because he’s family but because he wasn’t there (& I’m okay with never getting a full backstory on him tbh all we really need to know is he’s been MIA for years) he doesn’t really get it. This is clear from the start but it starts becoming increasingly clear from the first time Otis & Foxy have a conversation about Baby while she’s not there & Otis says quietly “you don’t know her like I do” to which Foxy doesn’t argue.
Baby likes to goof around with Foxy & she loves that he encourages her more unhinged shenanigans while Otis is constantly annoyed by her but in the motel room scene when she gets vulnerable she talks to Otis about how it’s “just the two of us.” Then Baby & Otis both continue to have a conversation about “the two of us” being the future (with Spaulding & the others they’ve lost being the past) totally ignoring Foxys annoyed presence until he finally gets them to cave & laugh & agree that it can be “the three of us.” Now yes they’re messing with him but 1) the conversation started before he entered the room & 2) I honestly don’t think they even meant it in a mean way I think they genuinely were just thinking of all they’ve been through together especially baby when she started the conversation. Therefore the focus was “the two of us” with no consideration for Foxy because he’s just mot fully part of that relationship. He’s hovering on the outskirts.
And when Baby realizes that the gang of assassins have been hired to come after them she immediately says “I have to go & warn Otis” even as the movie switches to showing Foxy emphasizing his presence - something Baby & Otis both keep almost forgetting.
It’s actually a pretty interesting dynamic. I like that the movie ends with the three of them presumably going off to cause more chaos & destruction & get fucked up & do fucked up shit but I definitely feel Foxy will never fully bridge that gap. He’ll always be a bit of an outsider in a dynamic that no one else will ever really be able to touch or enter. Which is really the only way I could accept a new character like him in the final movie like this.
