Do I add Boop to my Broppy playlist
i feel like many gus stans either woobify him completely or flatten him into a cool villain-type and virtually everyone ignores the (intentional and unintentional) politics of his character. the romantic aspects are complicated by the violence and vice versa and all of it is further complicated by the closetedness, cultural assimilation (or anti-assimilation), capitalism, and american individualism he represents. he’s no one’s ally. and he only falls in love with white dudes. one white dude. if youre really into him you can easily write a 20-pager on his precarious racial sexual political and economic positions. he’s so interesting but not for the same old things fandom is always rehashing.
i get we love it when walt gets owned but i think youre missing half the point if you dont recognize that gus reveals his own complicated “toxic” masculinity in his “a man provides” speech. i get we love seeing the cops fooled but we also should recognize what gus is doing when he chooses to assimilate. because he doesnt have to. his rejection of the mexican cartel and what it means beyond the narrative. the funny surreal american dream speech he gives his employees in bcs. he’s a minority conservative he’s an individualist capitalist. the racist/xenophobic implications of him cheating white people. the extent to which his assimilation attempt fails. he is outed as gay... undocumented and criminal. the closets plural he lives in. the communities he turns his back on to secure himself. gus can be his own flawed character (”flawed” meaning complex AND white-ly written) and not just walter white-hater #3.
(incomprehensible)
