“Is that advice self-experience?”

Sam wonders if it’s just bad luck or simply karma, the fact that of all things, a vampire would give him personal advice. Something out there in the universe must really have a sense of humor, but he can’t keep up with it. 

“Compassion makes you human, but maybe you forgot it, and loyalty keeps you grounded. You just need to find someone worthy of your loyalty. Not someone that expects you to be loyal just because you have to be. Being loyal and blindly following are two completely different things. Compassion and loyalty can also make you as powerful as you can be because as long as you have something to lose, you won’t rest until you destroy whatever tries to harm it.”

“But I confess I find it weird that you would share that piece of mind. With me, of all people.”

So Max had been dealt a bad hand that night. Was he a little careless? Yes. Had he walked into a pair of vetalas while looking for an artefact? Yes. Had he been prepared in case something went bump in the night? of course. He ends up needing more than the silver knife he always carries to have the job done, mostly because since vetalas hunt in duos and he’s alone, he is outnumbered. Using his magic to push one of them out of the shack Max buries the knife into the other before they have time to bite him. He’s lucky, because if those fangs dug into his flesh, he’d be paralized and out cold for a while. 

It’s only after he can take a breath that he notices the man by the door. Man being a stretch, because Max can sense the guy is not human; he just doesn’t know what variant of other thing is he. The second vetala doesn’t come back, so he assumes that whoever the guy is, he dealt with it. Max is not grateful, just curious at this point. 

“Ah.. well, I’m kind of in a rush, you see. So if you’re not going to try to kill me, I’ll collect what I came here for and you can talk while I work. Don’t worry, I can multitask.”
