I keep thinking about 'Rental Family' and what strikes me as a long forgotten 'novelty' in today's cinema is how there are so many setups that actually get a payoff.
I feel like a lot of films nowadays try to be oh so clever so they disregard the common film structure, try to keep things mysterious for too long and consequently fuck up the pacing.
'Rental Family' is a fairly simple film, if you pay enough attention to it you will be able to tell how things will be resolved.
And what would you know, instead of going 'ugh boring', it actually feels super satisfying to have a film wrap up every little detail they have established.
'Rental Family' works because instead of trying to be intelectually clever and trying to deceive you, it lays out all the cards on the table from the start so the satisfaction you get at the end of the film isn't of the intelectual sort, it's of the feeling sort. And, to me, that is what cinema is all about.
