Des takes after Malcolm so much, being a mage, and being tall and simply being what it means to be a Hawke.
But then, she also wants to make her mother happy. A lot happens to them since Lothering, and nothing comes easily, but Des just wants Leandra to be happy, to be content, to not have to worry (even though she will, anyway)
Losing Bethany made her feel as if something was always missing. They had magic, they shared time together, Des protected Beth in all situations.
Almost losing Carver made her urgent, aggressive towards Anders and towards Stroud to take him in the Wardens. She wasn’t going to lose the last member of her family, and even though he had to be sent away, knowing he was alive and well made up for it.
Desdemona definitely takes after Malcolm in terms of height and appearance, but has the soft features of Leandra that make her look younger than she is, even throughout her time in Kirkwall -- especially when in Act III she is tired and worn from all going on in her life that takes a toll on Hawke.
She and Carver are only four inches apart in height, whereas Bethany is the one who took more after Leandra, and is certainly a head shorter than Desdemona.
