A great little essay by Pauline Oliveros in which she describes what she is hearing while she is writting the essay. She also includes what thoughts and feelings that come up while she is writting and listening.

The goal for the SoundWorks Collection is simple; we are dedicated to profiling the greatest and upcoming sound minds from around the world and highlight their contributions. The SoundWorks Collection is produced by Director Michael Coleman of Colemanfilm Media Group in a partnership with MIX Magazine, several audio focused college schools and programs, and the support of the online sound community worldwide.
Orchestration & Streaming
Streaming
Listening involves collecting sounds into streams and tracking these streams as entities. This is a normal part of listening. The fact that we are able to separate out one conversation amongst many in a party indicates how developed this mental capacity is. In order to perform this amazing feat we have to analyse the qualities of the sounds that we hear and determine which group of sounds (like a series of words in a conversation, or a series of notes played on an instrument) belong together in a stream.

Making Motion Effects
Animating Sound
To suggest movement in sound you can animate the sound by various means such as by modulating a filter, modulating the pitch or the level of a sound. When synthesising the LFO is used for these effects but for recorded sounds there are a range of filters and tremolo devices (granular is a complex form of tremolo) that can do the job. Before signal processing composers often called for tremolo to suggest motion in orchestral music, see below:
Rythmn is often used to indicate energy and action. The opening of Pale Rider is a well crafted sequence involves visual, sonic and musical rhythms at different scales, rates and levels or organisation. Horses (loud and soft) contrasted aganist peaceful village sounds. When village is sacked by the horsemen the guns have a disjoined rhythm which is then taken up in the musical score. Its a bit corny but techniques are the point here

Synthesis Learning Software and Site
I have made a website that goes through the basics of oscillators, envelope generators, am, fm & ring modulation. You can download demonstration software that helps you learn the basic techniques and principles discussed in the site. See:

Basic Synthesis Elements
The basic structure of oscillator based synths hasn't changed since the designs where developed in the 1950's. The elements of a basic synth are shown below:

Garage Band
Garage Band is Apples entry level software for DAW software. The Pro level software is Logic (Pro). The great thing about Garage Band is that you can do a lot of basic sound design in GB. For my learning tasks you should be able to do everything in GB. See:
