TLDR; having complex thoughts about how dc media, especially batman, talks about mental illness. and i kind of connected with killer croc in the latest issue which also was kind of the whole point of the story i think

DISCLAIMER all of this is from my experience just as a person and people i’ve listened to or known. i’m not any kind of professional and a lot of the stuff i say may be inaccurate this isn’t a research essay it’s just my thoughts.

(also i use the term mad a lot here which is outdated and usually offensive but im used to it in some of my studies of disability and intersections of race and mental illness, so i just felt like it fit here. if you are not mentally ill and you’re thinking of using the term mad just uh. maybe don’t. or proceed with caution at least.)

OKAY SO

-a lot of batman stories play with madness and mental illness, and a lot of the time irdk how to feel about that. gotham’s asylum is synonymous with prison and it really just depends on what story you’re reading whether they lean into the asylum trying to work with mentally ill people or if it just serves carceral.

-i mostly consume media from 80s-90s so i expect the madness concepts to be most likely outdated / problematic. like, two face in batman the animated series coming across as having like DID (once again i am not a psychologist that’s just the impression i got). two face has never been a traditional villian (“this guy is evil and that’s his thing muahaha”) he’s not that cut and dry.

-and honestly, the two face episode isn’t like ah this person is mentally ill and that’s why they’re bad. it shows harvey being in regular therapy for ptsd from his childhood. and then him not getting help when he’s on the brink having a mental break is the inciting incident to his descent into antagonist two face over cool guy harvey. so more progressive than i went in expecting but at the end of the day it’s still like— here’s our bad guy. here’s his mental illness.

-i think it’s interesting because this issue (batman #1 remember we were talking about that) is modern and we’re getting a depiction of an antagonist who is experiencing madness. i feel like i’m going in immediately with walls up like oh shit is it gonna be problematic. but the truth is stuff like this isn’t like very black and white. so idk im trying to just put aside preconceived notions and sit with the story instead
