Months ago my sister ( @sleepyxsheep ) asked me what I wanted her to crochet me for Christmas, and of course I told her I wanted Solas. We are both avid Dragon Age fans. She asked me what outfit I wanted him in and I showed first showed her his regular outfits, but then I found a picture of him in a Sailor Moon outfit by @sihavellan that I found when googling âsolas outfitâ. Well, lo and behold, she actually did it. I present: Sailor Solas.

I personally wasnât tagged by anyone, but since I have an alarmingly small number of posts here, I decided to answer sihavellanâs questions.

1. Your favorite dinosaur and why?
I really donât have one. I donât even know many. And I wouldnât complain to see just any because⌠well, they are extinct. So it would be sort of cool. I guess.
2. Make me a playlist. You pick the theme.
Okay, tough. How many songs? Letâs cap it at 10.
Iâm in a silent mood at the moment, so Iâll compose it of such songs. (Ask me next week and you might get a compilation of hardcore and punk.) Letâs call it⌠mhm⌠âWhat is the meaning of life? And if so, how many?â
Harry Nilsson - Everybodyâs Talkinâ
Tracy Chapman - For my Lover
Bob Dylan - Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again
The Rolling Stones - Jigsaw Puzzle (not only because it basically steals from the Memphis Blues mentioned above)
Wendy McNeill (feat. Ane Brun) - Such a Common Bird
Billy Joel - Tomorrow is Today
Modest Mouse - Parting of the Sensory
The White Stripes - 300 m.p.h. Torrential Outpour Blues
Pearl Jam - Alive
Nick Cave - More News From Nowhere
But wait, thereâs so many more, canât be 10 already. *sigh*
3. Â Who is your historical boyfriend, girlfriend, paramour?
Marquis de Sade. While the question implies to only state the fact, I shall point out that I pick him not for the pornography but for its context; his people-oriented, open-minded, nonmaterialistic approach to existentialism, freedom, and equality, expressed by using pornography as a vehicle.
4. Describe your work space / desk space.
Chewing gum, tea bags, loose tea, a bottle of water, two cups (one of which I never use⌠is it mine even? Where did it come from?), a VGA adapter, a note book, oh, an empty water bottle⌠I should throw it away. Though I might still need it? Better keep it. Where was I? Right. A telephone, a knife, a book on multiprocessor programming (I think this belongs to somebody... uh...), an empty plate, a pack of printing paper. An envelope with⌠oh, thereâs my copy of the contract, cool. Alright, what else. Lecture slides and an empty pack of banh com rice cakes. A few documents I shouldnât comment on. Along with a lamp and a second screen I never use. And cables, of course. A few cables that⌠surely have some purpose. Better not touch them, weâve coexisted too well to run risks now.
5. Pretend that you have to design a greeting card or motivational poster. Describe it.
Iâm basically the worst person for the job. It would probably be this photo I saw yesterday, which impressed me:
Being a motivational poster I should probably point out the important bits. So I might have an arrow point at the dirt on her dress, another at the reflection in the window of the guy using his smartphone (?), ignoring her completely. And some line in a plain, unexciting font. Maybe âIt doesnât get easier, you must get strongerâ. Or something.
6. What is your epic theme song?
Just any song (difficult task, because depends on the mood) or an actual âtheme songâ (in which case the Batman theme⌠any of them)?
7. Your favorite celestial object in the sky, and why?
When I was all tangled up in astronomy it was Jupiter. But since you canât actually see much of it with the plain eye, Iâd just say âstar constellationsâ. No particular one, itâs just this idea that the world is so big and there is so much space around us which we hardly know anything about. And knowing that everything is connected; every celestial object can have an influence on another. Also, we see a few tiny dots in the sky, but in fact they are so huge. And men mentally organizes them in constellations, while they themselves couldnât care less. Those objects, theyâve existed for ages and will continue to do so long after weâre all gone. Everything that seems so important to us is so trivial to them, including our classification of them. Yes, so basically, I have a whole set of weird, not thought-through ideas.
8. Favorite scent?
No particular one, this really depends on the mood and situation. Hungry, a leftover pizza can smell like the greatest thing in the world.
9. Your first thought in the morning?
âMeh"
10. Describe your aesthetic using figurative language.
Ugh.
11. What is best in life? (Conan references welcome, but not required)
Being content with oneself.Â
(I am sorry I canât provide a Conan reference.)
Alright, 11 new questions⌠but I refuse to tag anybody. While I do know some people here more than others, picking particular people seems like those were more interesting than others and I donât want to do that. (Ha!) So, please everybody answer who feels like doing so.
1. What is your favorite genre of video games?
2. Is there a music album that has accompanied you throughout (a longer part of) your life? If so, which one and why?
3. If you had to pick one property for a relationship, which would it be?
4. Whatâs your favorite drink?
5. What place do you wish to visit (at least) once in your life?
6. What childhood wish did you fulfill later as an adult? (And was it as expected?)
7. Which song is currently your favorite?
8. What decade did you grow up in and how, do you think, did it influence you?
9. Whatâs your favorite game and why?
10. What game (that you played) did you enjoy the least and why?
âFaust: Who holds the devil, let him hold him well, He hardly will be caught a second time.â (Goethe)
Bound by Flame was a surprise for me. Reviews are mixed with a tendency to negative. Turns out I quickly labeled the game fun-fun-fun. There are issues but overall I enjoyed it a lot. And I liked the graphical style, though cutscene animations are a bit clunky (and voice acting is on the poor side).
Classes
You can play male or female (with moderate customization, i.e. pick one of 4 or 5 faces and hair styles) and train three different classes, fighter, ranger (rogue), and pyromancer (fire mage), which are not mutually exclusive. You always carry a sword, bow, and daggers and switch between them on the fly. Fire magic is limited to spells, which you can use even if you donât encourage the demon. I mostly trained daggers and mixed in a bit of fire when appropriate.
Gameplay & Difficulty
Combat is where this game shines. The movements are impressive and it all feels posh and powerful. Shooting an arrow from afar, followed by a jump at the enemy, hitting him with a flurry of dagger blows, before evading with a backward roll and throwing a fireball that pushes him to the ground, instantly jumping back at him to hammer your sword right into his chest. Just a number of button presses and aiming, but it looks so smooth, feels to elegant. Fun!
Many people complained the game were too difficult; I donât agree. Yes, it felt difficult in the beginning and pulling through âCaptainâ difficulty was nearly frustratingly tough â at first. Thatâs mainly because the single enemy types donât level up; so when you start out every fly is stronger than you and can almost instantly kill you. (Obviously you werenât one of the good merchs before, maybe your boss only had you run errands or something.) You have pathetic little daggers, basically no protection, and the spiders in the woods just laugh hard when they see you posturing in front of them ready to launch your full frontal assault. But after levelling up once or twice you won't dread traveling from A to B anymore, and by the end of the game you are so overpowered that only a few enemy types still challenge you. (Until the final battle, but I will come to that later.)
Story & Characters
The RPG section offers you companions, romance, and decisions. Most of it is underdeveloped.
The companions are exaggerated archetypes without depth, presented rather one-dimensionally to provoke a quick response. The warrior is sad, broken, and lonely with a very soft core under his rough shell. The elf is a sarcastic idealist revolutionary outcast bound to be the next leader. And so on. I enjoyed them, but they remained shallow representatives of a class, not actual people. But thatâs okay because my girl herself was basically an ignorant thug whose mental horizon reached from the wallpaper to the wall.
Overall, characters were not too likeable but maybe that just really makes sense in the world they live in.
I romanced the handsome elf and the weird warrior and it was tough work because you had to pick a few precise lines to get the desired outcome, which was actually nothing more than a few seconds of holding hands and a short static kiss. I wouldnât even call it romance.
Decisions do have an influence, but not on the story (which isnât too strong anyway). Mostly they are "demon decisionsâ, meaning you shape your character and not the world around. If you pick âhumaneâ choices and deny the demon you will still look human and can wear helmets, but you will be a bit weaker in your powers. If you wander on the fiery side your body will change and increase your powers. The first time around I played an undecided mix of both, gaining me no trophies. Then I went for âfully humanâ, my next playthrough saw the demon path (Screenshots: http://sihavellan.tumblr.com/post/117849436184/the-metamorphosis-of-vulcan-or-why-video-games).
Final Battle
So, I loved the game up to this point. The characters are a bore, the protagonist is nothing short of annoying, the demon inside could be a bit more demony, but overall itâs cool. Now we are off to meet the final boss, the unleashed demon. And this is where everything falls apart. The boss battle is among the worst, maybe even the worst, Iâve ever played. It is tough, but thatâs not the issue. The issue is that itâs frustrating. Or let me recall the thought I had after about 10 minutes into my first encounter with the final boss: âAre you fucking kidding me? You canât be serious..."
It goes on forever. I guess it takes about 20 mins if you get it all right straight away (usually I die after maybe 18 mins). Those 20-25 mins are composed of two phases. First, you fight the demon on the ground. In a few iterations you will run around the arena to evade her fast projectiles. She also charges at you once in a while with enormous speed. Eventually she recharges for a sec and you jump at her as quickly as you can to deal some moderate damage. Repeat this until she hides and her dragon appears. Second, you fight that dragon. It sits on one side of the arena, breathing fire at you, and you must âdestroy" all his extremities and the head. This part is easy but lengthy, tedious work. When done, repeat stage 1 and fight the demon on the ground. I am not sure how many of these cycles it takes, maybe 8? It feels forever. Demon - dragon - repeat. Demon - dragon - repeat.
I still die, most of the time, by the demon. But it does not feel like I died because I played bad. It feels like I died because I got tired or because the controls stuck for a moment. The demonâs projectiles will damage you a bit even if they donât hit you, so I used up most of my healing potions. Iâm not a bad gamer but this boss fight is either just really bad or requires much more skill than I have. It seems Spiders just tried to make an epic boss fight without any real idea how to. I donât think I will ever finish the game again, no matter how often I will replay it.
However, overall the game is among my favorites for gameplay.

Hey Sethius, how would you feel if I erected a temple for you to worship? (wink wink).
In vino veritas. In wine thereâs truth. You want to know where else you can find truth? In my bed.
So, I hear you are the high priest of Dumat? The god of silence? Well, I can certainly hold my tongue. You want to know what else I can do with my tongue?
Estne volumen in toga, an solum tibi libet me videre? (Is that a scroll in your toga, or are you just happy to see me?)
Looks at robe: I see you can create a monument more lasting than bronze.
You are my magis-star (jazz hands).
You can call me the magister amoris (magister of love).
I personally have no hard feelings toward Solas. I donât actually want to see him dead. In fact, Iâm not even a Solasmancer, Iâm just a sucker for fatalism in entertainment media.
It started out with the picture I posted a while ago (http://sihavellan.tumblr.com/post/118779726159/dont-look-back-in-anger). But then DJ Shuffle played Tom Jonesâs Delilah and that murder ballad idea was simply too intriguing. Throw in some more Nick Cave and Johnny Cash... well, I never stood a chance.
Btw, the lines are Oasis - Donât Look Back in Anger (âMy soul slides away, but donât look back in anger I heard you sayâ), but I like how they arenât really there...
I donât know how Ms Perfect managed to mess up her fishnets, but tough battle is tough, obviously. (At least I managed to stay reasonable enough to not draw a ranged fighter bathed in blood.)
Poison Vivie
Poison Ivy - âMadame de Ferâ Vivienne
BioWare vs. DC Comics
Recently Iâve felt the motivation to draw a bit. Iâve seen some Dragon Age / Marvel crossovers and this made me think of doing something similar. Iâm a DC girl, so I decided to go for a series of DC / BioWare crossovers. I donât know how many I will actually come up with, but this is the first entry:Â
Wonder Cass
(Wonder Woman - Cassandra Pentaghast)
BioWare vs. CD (BWDC)
(I donât know about legal disclaimers, but obviously I should point out that Wonder Woman and Cassandra Pentaghast are properties of their respective owners, DC and BioWare.)

This is my first attempt at using an image manipulation program to draw (and my first time drawing at all in 15+ years).
My stuff is always tagged âphotoshopâ, but in fact I donât own Photoshop. I use GIMP 2.8 instead, which is great open source freeware and deserves even more credit than it already gets (and I canât even use it right).
I am not really content with it, but I fear this is the best I can come up with. (Click opens larger picture in separate window.)
The lines are from:
Oasis
âDonât Look Back In Angerâ
from (Whatâs The Story) Morning Glory (1995)
Solas made Cole forget. About his plans, his intentions, and his most dangerous secrets. So much is hinted, but Cole cannot remember any of it, so there goes our only eye witness.
But how? How can Solas erase somebodyâs mind? Relentless investigations helped us find the answer. Solas used a top secret device called âneuralyzerâ, to which he only had access due to his former employment with a secret non-government organization named MIB. See an archive photo, supposedly taken by a civilian around the year 1997:
Due to the clever disguises used by these ominous MIB associates we were unable to identify the individuals on the pictures. However, a reliable source confirmed that Solas is seen on the right of the following photo (at that time he wore hair, which makes it harder to recognize him).
"You should have seen me when I was younger. Hot-blooded and cocky, always ready to fight.", Solas said, but what he didnât know is that thereâs actually photo documentary evidence...
Eye witnesses claimed that Solas really didnât like IKEA. However, it is yet unclear how this influenced his later actions, namely locking away the ancient gods and giving his orb to Corypheus.
Welcome to the next episode of âSiha babbles about Tripple-B gamesâ. Well, Blades of Time isnât even Tripple-B, itâs C, at best. A while ago, I set out to play all action/stealth games with female protagonists that I could find. It was expected to be a bumpy ride, and Blades of Time fits right in. Itâs a cheap game all-over. I didnât expect to like it and when I started playing I felt confirmed. But I changed my mind somewhere around the end of the first level.
Graphics & Setting
The graphics arenât too good, especially the characters look unpolished and exaggerated. The heroine's body model is typically deformed, and she (Ayumi) walks like a duck with a hip dysplasia. (However, her first outfit features the coolest boots.)
But the linear environments are done well. Most of all, the single levels actually throw you into completely different settings, so neither the environment nor the gameplay gets boring too quickly. You have chaos regions that slow you down, icy winter worlds where you canât slide well, a desert where you must avoid sunlight, in the Sky Islands you can fly and so on.
Gameplay
The game borrows heavily from other games -- a bit of shooting, some Tomb Raider style platforming and puzzles, hackânâslash combat, and some fake RPG skill tree overlay. Most of the time I went with the hackânâslash. You can build combos after filling your rage meter through successful hits. While first-tier skills include weapon enhancements and AoE strikes, second-tier skills allow for powerful crowd control. In addition, you have a rifle (or machine gun), and you can temporarily pick up rocket launchers in particular regions. Which weapon, ability, or fighting style you use is up to you. Usually many approaches will wield positive results.
The one gameplay element that was new to me, but probably has been done before, was the time rewind ability, by which Ayumi can create duplicates of herself, which she can use to distract enemies, double damage inflicted, or be in two places at once (e.g. to solve puzzles). In fact, this ability is so powerful that it massively helps beating a few of the tougher enemy types. Using it effectively however still requires a bit of thinking.
Difficulty
Itâs one of the games that force you to play on medium before unlocking the hard difficulty. (I donât know why the first of two difficulties is called medium, but anyway. At least they didnât come up with ridiculous names like other games do. Then again, I am far too uncreative. If I designed games, difficulties would be called âeasyâ, ânormalâ, âhardâ on my better days, usually probably only â1â, â2â, â3â.) I havenât yet played on hard, but medium is fairly easy. I died a few times, but only because I jumped to my death or because I didnât figure out what to do at first, thus not evading quickly enough. Most bosses I could kill on my first attempt and even the final boss went down without much of a fuss. Overall it was a cakewalk.
Story
The story is simple, a rather typical âchaos rules the world and you must try to oppose itâ setting. They tried to include twists at the end, but they didnât actually surprise me. However, while the ending was stereotypical, the story progression kept me invested enough throughout the short campaign. It was interesting to learn about the world itself, the final confrontation was not actually relevant. In the levels you pick up notes and diary pages and those peaked my interest. I was a bit disappointed that the ending didnât pick up on them. But probably thatâs the price you pay if information are collectibles. In general, I played worse and while nothing came as too much of a surprise, I was also never bored.
I enjoyed this game. I really like it, I will replay it, and I recommend it. It isnât exceptionally good at anything, but it was one of the most fun games I've played. While grinding through AC:Unity is tedious work for me right now, which I only pull through with because somebody has to do it to save the world, I cut my way through Blades of Time in three days, enjoying every step of the way.

So Siha canât art. But who needs to drawn when you can set a few coordinates and angles? Well, maybe drawing would be better still... but you have to take what you can get. Or do. Or whatever.
