He sang along to homophobic slurs in songs, even after I called him out on it. It wasn’t out of malice or hatred, but because he was, and I say this lovingly but sincerely, an absolute idiot.

When I came out to him, though, he was completely supportive, if a little confused.

Now, he takes me to my local pride festival every year. He hasn’t said a slur in years and, when my younger siblings say something rude because they don’t know any better, he corrects them.

My dad loves me more than he ever hated anyone. Sometimes, the people we think are evil are really just confused. That’s not an excuse, of course, but it helps to remember.

It gets better. People get better.
