Yesterday, as I was scrolling though Twitter, I saw reports starting to come in of an attack on a refugee camp in northern Gaza. After the confusion in the aftermath of the hospital attack before, news sites were a lot more leery of actually mentioning Israel or even airstrikes at all, so we got reporting like this:
But, at this point Israel actually seems to have no compunctions about admitting what they're doing and straight up taking credit because just a little while later I see people remarking on how in this interview:
even Wolf Blitzer, who used to work for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC, a powerful lobby), seems somewhat taken aback and asking for confirmation that the IDF is really saying what they're saying.
(By the way, not to leave out the continued journalistic passive voice cowardice on display only with respect to this conflict, this is what the New York Times text alert sent out:
A NEARBY HOSPITAL REPORTED MANY DEATHS???)
But anyway, okay, so Israel hit a refugee camp, terrible, cruel, the day ends.
Today, I wake up, and I see some tweets saying again they've hit Jabalia, and even my at this point cynical mind couldn't in a million years have thought they literally meant "again", I thought oh, they just mean that in an ongoing series of bombing places they shouldn't, they've hit a refugee camp, they're referring to yesterday's attack.
No.
Who would have thought they'd do it AGAIN? I don't want to post the aftermath of the videos and pics, but they were horrendous, and to do it again? So like, did not kill the alleged reported Hamas leader the first time? It was just many people's lives ruined forever for no reason?
But guys, then they attacked it a THIRD time.
I'm honestly just so sad right now. When will it end? We need a ceasefire now.
if you don't do anything else today,
Please have a moment of silence for the people who were killed instead of freed when news of emancipation finally reached the furthest corners of the american south.
have another moment for the ledgers, catalogs, and records that were burned and the homes that were destroyed to hide the presence of very much alive and still enslaved people on dozens of plantations and homesteads across the south for decades after emancipation.
and have a third moment for those who were hunted and killed while fleeing the south to find safety across the border, overseas, in the north and to the west.
black people. light a candle, write a note to those who have passed telling them what you have achieved in spite of the racist and intolerant conditions of this world, feel the warmth of the flame under your hand, say a prayer of rememberance if you are religious, place the note under the candle, and then blow it out.
if you have children, sit them down and tell them anything you know about the life of oldest black person you've ever met. it doesn't have to be your own family. tell them what you know about what life was like for us in the days, years, decades after emancipation. if you don't know much, look it up and learn about it together.
This is Juneteenth.

I don’t have words for what we’ve seen in Turkey and Syria today.
The earthquake hit at night. It hit cities that house millions of people. Thousands of buildings, buildings full of sleeping people, have been destroyed. It is winter.
There is little any one person can do, but a lot of little deeds add up to big ones.
I’ve included a couple of links to NGOs that are helping get people and supplies on the ground below. If you can send help, I urge you to do so. If you can’t, I’d ask you to spread the word far and wide. Every little bit helps. If you save one person, you’ve saved a world.

September 26, 2022 - Congratulations to the Cuban people for voting in favor of the Family Code! [article]
The new code guarantees the right of all people to form a family without discrimination, legalizing same sex marriage and allowing same sex couples to adopt children. Under the new code, parental rights will be shared among extended and non-traditional family structures that could include grandparents, step parents and surrogate mothers. The code also adds novelties such as prenuptial agreements and assisted reproduction.
The Code promotes equal distribution of domestic responsibilities amongst men and women and extends labor rights to those who care full-time for children, the elderly, or people with disabilities. The code establishes the right to a family life free from violence, one that values love, affection, solidarity and responsibility. It codifies domestic violence penalties, and promotes comprehensive policies to address gender-based violence.
The Code also outlaws child marriage and corporal punishment, stating that parents will have “responsibility” instead of “custody” of children, and will be required to be “respectful of the dignity and physical and mental integrity of children and adolescents.” It also asserts that parents should grant maturing offspring more say over their lives.
The new code also expands the rights of the elderly and people with disabilities. It recognizes the role of grandfathers and grandmothers in the transmission of values, culture, traditions and care.

About to dox myself a little. Please be gentle.
My country, Pakistan, is drowning. A third of Pakistan is at risk of being deluged by massive floods. 1000+ people have been killed, countless others displaced. We have the highest number of glaciers outside the poles, and because of climate change, they’re melting. The knock-on effect is unspeakable—and yet we must speak of it. Tragedy upon tragedy, especially against our poor and most marginalized, and it feels ceaseless.
Pakistan is just one of many countries who will be—who are being—disproportionately affected by climate change. We need international solidarity and we need radical change. Climate change is here, it is happening, it has been happening. The developed world owes developing countries on a moral level; corporations have bloody hands; the neoliberal economic order has stricken us with debts that are choking us; and through it all, we must—cruelly—battle for air against so many other people and causes who deserve equal attention, equal outrage, equal concern. That is not the world we deserve. That is not the world that will save us from climate change. We need to reimagine what a just world will look like. We need to build global, truly global, solidarity. And in the meantime, we need reparations.
If you can, please consider donating to one of these relief efforts.

Just as a heads up, you are going to see a LOT of fundraisers coming up in winter for people in the UK to make energy bills. This has been absolutely massive on UKPol twitter but I don't see it coming up here much at all, so, I'm just kind of passing it on.
The long and short of it is the energy price cap - the maximum that can be charged to customers for a specific type of energy contract (dual-fuel, so gas and electric, on a 'typical usage', on a fixed rate contract) - is going up. And it's going up a lot. Way above what people can afford.
It's estimated by January, that price cap might be as high as £5,000 ($6,000) a year, or over £400 ($490) a month. Last October, that cap was only £1,200 ($1450). For a single person, that's almost a quarter of your salary on fuel alone. For some comparisons, my mom only makes £19,000 a year ($23,000) and I only make £13,000 ($15,000)
And that's on a very specific, very secure contract. I use a top-up meter, which often charges way more than we would on a fixed-rate contract, and it's all the poorest households who use top-up meters instead of contracts. Add to that the cost for disabled people to keep equipment running, or other confounding factors, and many, many, many people in the UK are just not going to be able to afford to even keep a light on, never mind cook or heat their homes.
No lights, no cooking, no refridgeration, no heating, no internet, nothing.
This is a national emergancy, and absolutely nothing is being done by our government because it's too busy suffocating on internal squabbling. OFGEM (The energy regulator) won't do anything because of it's own fuck-ups, resulting in it being more interested in keeping profits flowing for energy companies than protecting consumers.
It's going to be a very, very cold, dark, hard winter for people in the UK. If you are in the UK and want to do something to help, there is a Consumer Strike being organised by a group called Don't Pay UK. Get involved if you can, and spread the word if you cant.
It's genuinely upsetting how many notes I've had from people on this post that amount to "We just can't afford it, we're going to freeze/starve/die". As people have pointed out - the bill is going to be a lot higher than £5,000 for many. I've seen someone quoted over £10,000. Meanwhile, energy companies are reporting record profits, so don't let a single person say it's to keep up with the cost of gas. Also, you get less than £400 a month if you're on out-of-work benefits, if you want even more comparison to how prices in the UK work.
I understand people's reservations about Don't Pay UK. But there is a lot you can do to force the hands of the energy companies that does not pose much risk to you. It just takes a little strategy.
Check out Don't Pay UK's FAQ. There is a 28 day window in which you can withold payment without any consequences. You can also lodge a complaint with OFGEM at the same time, which will prevent your energy company from taking action against you - and a million complaints hitting OFGEM at once would cripple the entire administrative system designed to deal with them and would probably make every single energy company fail to meet their obligations to OFGEM at once, as they physically won't be able to respond to every complaint in time.
And for many, you aren't going to be able to afford it anyway. There's nothing else to lose.
For other tips;
There's also this, Heat the Human Not the Home from Martin Lewis, who's been an unexpected champion in all this - cheap ways to heat yourself, even if you can't heat your home. If you're scared of being cold, please check this out first.

British Gas Energy Fund has grants available to "clear domestic gas and electricity debts."***
SSE has info + links for different ways you can get help with energy bills and debts
EDF energy have provided a page with information on how to get financial advice/help via IncomeMax
Please look into everything I've said yourself and make your own decisions. But we really can't sit idly by whilst people freeze to death.

the united states is on the verge of outlawing access to abortion with the overturning of the supreme court case roe v. wade.
this case makes it legal in the usa to get an abortion. without it, the 26 states in red below will automatically make any and all abortion illegal
why is this concerning? well obviously the fact people won’t be able to access safe abortion, but also what could be next.
potentially a federal ban on abortion in all states. more restrictions to birth control. hell, a couple of the supreme court justices have openly said they want to reverse gay marriage. who knows what’s next for civil rights.
our system is a shit show that just continues to oppress the already disenfranchised.
and i know this can feel helpless and so overwhelming, but don’t give up the fight!
abortion pills by mail that everyone in the world can get
donate to an abortion fund (or find your local one!)
or find and contact your congress people to demand abortion protection (or any other cause you care about!) it’s so easy to send an email or even call them at night to get their answering machine!
i posted some more stuff about how to do self managed abortions. but right now i’m going to smoke a fat joint and probably cry, lol (because sitting with our emotions is important too!)
in the meantime, if any of y’all have questions or want to just talk or vent, i’m here for it. my day job is working at planned parenthood, so this stuff is pretty close to me and i like to think i have a good understanding of it all

NWSLPA Teams will stop play in each of tonight’s games at the 6th minute. Players will join together in solidarity at the center circle for one minute in recognition of the 6 years it took for Mana, Sinead, and all those who fought for too long to be heard.
NO MORE SILENCE.
Abortion rights are under attack, and it’s time to fight back.
If you think this is just about Texas or ‘red’ states, you’re wrong. Attacks on abortion anywhere are a threat to our rights everywhere. Today Texas’ SB8 takes effect. This dangerous and extreme law bans abortion as early as six weeks (way before most people even know they’re pregnant) and includes an unprecedent provision that allows private individuals - including anti-abortion protestors - to file lawsuits enforcing the bans. There’s even a monetary reward - up to $10,000 - for successful lawsuits. There have been over 90 abortion restrictions enacted this year alone - more than any year since Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973. It’s time to raise the alarm - keep #bansoffourbodies. What can you do?
