Continuing from my last post where I mentioned his sensory issues regarding loud noises, I want to point out his sensitivity to lights:

He gets distracted very easily by small or flickering lights, so much so that he straight up left Shellington without saying another word just to follow one, and had to cover his eyes to hide from the reflection of Tunip’s tools all the way from a separate pod.

… SPEAKING OF SHELLINGTON, the otter is also Autistic. He’ll get his own post, but I’m mentioning it here because Autistic people tend to gravitate towards other Autistics, due to their understanding/kinship of one another.

And, yeah. Aside from Kwazii and Peso, he definitely worries about Shellington the most out of everyone. He’s also usually the one to initiate Shellington to infodump by talking about sea creatures, despite already knowing quite a lot himself.

Holidays can be a stressful time for various reasons; Barnacles in particular struggles when he doesn’t know what to expect, or when he doesn’t feel in control. So, he made this “Christmas Countdown” clock to combat this. Even though it is technically Christmas day throughout the whole special, it still isn’t Christmas until he gets to say so. He even gets frustrated a couple times with the worms for being impatient.

He has a habit of explaining situations to the crew before a mission, even if they would all know what going on already. This could be part of his routine as well, or it could be him trying to process the information himself by describing it out loud.

Last time I talked about his special interest in the Octopod itself, now I’ll dive more into his other ones:

Also, the faces on the bowling balls are actually two separate fully-sized drawings that took me like two extra hours 😭. Could I have just done simpler versions on the same page? Yes. Yes I could have. But I couldn't just say "no" to drawing cute tiny versions of my two favourite gay animatronics!!! Plus, they make the bowling balls look way more detailed! 💙💙

Context: After his navy ship, the Manitoba, sank, Barnacles has never been able to handle the sounds related to that incident very well. Things like loud bangs/explosions, scraping and grinding and tearing metal, and other such auditory triggers have always, obviously, triggered him. In the modern day, he can handle it much easier, but when he was a freshly made Octonaut, only a year into this new venture, the Octopod 1 sank and Barnacles panicked viscerally. Inkling being the only one who knows about the Manitoba's sinking (even in the modern day since Barnacles has kept it secret all this time) was the only one who could comfort the frightened and frantic captain, not that there were many other witnesses. Tweak was the only other Octonaut at that time, and to her, this massive, intimidating, and formerly extremely professional and serious leader-figure suddenly being reduced to a trembling, sobbing, hyperventilating wreck of a man was more frightening than the crash itself. No one was hurt and the damage, while debilitating, wasn't catastrophic, so she couldn't understand why Barnacles was so freaked out. But still to this day neither Inkling nor Barnacles have ever explained what happened to her, and she never brought it up again, mostly due to Inkling's request not to.

Also, Barns used to wear an eyepatch over his scar because he was insecure 💔 he doesn't anymore tho lol ,,, look at bro healing <3 he doesn't have his military ahh buzz cut anymore either as part of his recovery process to distance himself the sad times :3

And that's all :3 hopefully soon I'll finish up his lore and create a full post for his entire life/backstory like I intend to (with every character eventually). I've got all but his childhood, which contains a lotta moving parts and different characters, and the perfectionist in me won't let me make the "big important post TM" have any missing pieces 😭 hopefully ill get the inspirational spark back soon </3
