Do you experience that many annoying or weird people who are fans of you? And if so, is it still worth it for the attention and interaction with fans?
For context, I've always really wanted a sort of small 'fandom' for my work, and bigger artists always tell me it's not worth it... But it always pisses me off because THEY HAVE what I want and it looks so fun 😭 I know there are definitely downsides, but I was curious how you felt about it 😅
There have been unpleasant interactions in the past yeah. Sometimes it was just annoying, other times genuinely stressful. It's important to have boundaries with your audience, that's what I've learned haha.
Other people have had it much MUCH worse than I, and I still often struggle dealing with things.
I was in your position, and it's normal to want eyes on your art. It's validation, it's encouraging. Some people say 'it doesn't matter how much attention your art gets', but the truth is, for a lot of people - art is MADE so that it's looked at. Comics are made to be READ. I have this mindset myself, so I totally get it. I say go for it, just be ready for what it takes and for what may happen....
You may attract unwanted attention. Parasocial fans, I almost got doxxed one time, I've almost doxxed MYSELF cuz I was young and dumb. It's important to build boundaries and be careful which crowds you end up in. Try to stay away from people who are obsessed with fandom or shipping drama.
Being obsessed with attention and numbers and fans - it FUCKS UP your mental health. It will make you hate your art sometimes. I've had huge lows in the past, I've burnt out on projects over it, I've felt envy and paranoid that at any point I will lose everything I've worked for just because of an algorithm or simply cuz people get bored. And you have to be ready that they will.
It's given me self esteem and ego problems in the past, though to be fair I've been exposed to 'online fame' since a very young age ahaha
This next one is a bit more specific, but if your OCs get popular... like REALLY popular... people will start doing what they want with them. Make their own comics. Their own AUs. Headcanons. I've made characters in the past that I see art of with no credit, or some super nebulous half-given credit. On one hand this can be super fun, it's like free content of your own characters, but other times, it's frustrating and daunting. And you're gonna have to let go of your darlings somewhat, because trying to control that many people is just stressful.
Sometimes your art will become bigger than you. So many of my comics have gotten big enough to be dubbed on youtube by large channels, and people go to them instead of my own art. Even when credit is given, I'm gonna tell you now- most viewers miss it and will never know who you are. At least in my experience it's often been that way. This one is a very specific scenario but it happens. Oh and don't get me started on art theft/reposts BRUH-
But upsides!!
It IS fun. You got a community built around your stuff! Validation, encouragement, investment, HONOUR. Seriously, it's honouring. To have this many eyes and this much investment, it's like being a kid in a candy store and everything's FREE.
It's huge encouragement to keep going and keep improving.
You might even make new friends!
And if you're able to monetise it: EVEN BETTER. Whether it be commissions, patreon OR if you're trying to get a career in art, THIS IS VITAL. So many artists rely on their audience and presence for work opportunities. This is great but also a double edged sword...
What's important is just.. balance. Strive for what you want, but don't become unhealthily obsessed with it.
Build boundaries, verbal and mental, with your audience.
Stay true to your art, draw what YOU want, WHEN you want.

No, your oc isn't too cringe or a Mary sue. Yes, it's completely fine that it looks similar to your other ocs. Yes it's completely fine that it looks similar to a Canon character design. No it's not uncreative. No the design isn't shitty. No the backstory doesn't have to make perfect sense or be all figured out. Yes it can be self indulgent or unrealistic or overly sappy. No you don't draw your favorite character too much. Yes you can flip flop between developing whatever characters you want. No you don't have to keep the parts of your character that you don't like or that make you uncomfortable just for the sake of consistency, realism or whatever else
