Hey friends! I’m here to teach you about safety when it comes to buying sex toys. Many people don’t know this, but not all sex toys are 100% healthy to use. Certain materials are not meant to be used on your intimate parts. So lets get started!
Some materials are porous, meaning they have a certain amount of small pores, some more than others. This is an issue because bacteria can get into these pores, and you definitely don’t want to put anything containing bacteria inside of you. Certain materials are more porous than others, and there are some materials that aren’t porous at all. Additionally, certain toys contain Phthalates, which are used to soften toys. Phthalates are considered a carcinogen. Enough exposure can cause reproductive issues and even cancer. Here are a list of common materials and how safe they are:

Unfortunately, it’s a little difficult to tell which toys contain phthalates and which don’t (it’s mostly PVC and Jelly though). Many companies will list “phthalate free” in the toy description, but they’re technically not required by law to tell the truth. There are no legal safety regulations regarding the sex toy industry. Often, sex toys are labeled “novelty”. This means that, if something were to go wrong during the use of the toy, the company might not be held liable.
So how can you tell what toys are safe and which aren’t in an industry that can legally lie to you?
Read up! Make sure you always thoroughly read the description when buying online. If buying in a local store, read the box! It also helps to do a little Google research. You can never be too safe.
Check the toy itself. If possible, there are certain ways to tell whether or not a toy contains phthalates. Usually, a toy with phthlates will have a chemical smell. Some people say it resembles that “new car smell”. Also, check if the toy has any type of residue on it. Many unsafe toys “sweat” due to chemical depredation of the materials.
My suggestion? Opt for non-porous toys, and buy a good toy cleaner. Even though they have no bacteria harboring pores, it’s much better to be safe than sorry! Also make sure you always use water-based lubes to keep your toys from being damaged. Water-based lubes are also better for your body.
