Viviane Schwarz had the tuesday talk this week after having the game lecture earlier the same day. She talked about her process of making games and some of her bigger projects. 

My favorite was a shark game she made out of a 200m long strip of cardboard. Some people were sharks wearing shark fins on their heads, and the others had to collect gold coins without getting caught by the shark. But if the shark found them they had to throw the coins in the air.

The bee game ended up being the game we wanted to develop. And to be honest, it turned out pretty good.

Our last project of the year is making board games. I wasn’t too excited about this in the beginning to be honest, but it’s so much fun! I’m in a group with Justine, Mark and Izzy. We made a couple of games over the weekend, here are some of them:

The great essay race! Be the first to develop an idea, do the research, plan, write and check for plagiarism. But you have to have a cup of coffee to throw the dice!

Sunburn: It’s Burning! Get from the beach to the hotel as fast as you can without getting burnt to a toast. 

The fabric store (this was the first game we made) To escape at the checkout you have to collect all of the tokens around the store. But watch out for the elephant who can block your way. Or the old lady who will make you miss two go’s. 

For the essay I read a book called The Social Production of Space by Henri Levfbre, and it’s great.

I found it surprisingly interesting even though I didn’t understand absolutely everything because of some difficult words.

‘Now let us consider for a moment any given space, any ‘interval’ provided that it is not empty. Such a space contains things yet is not itself a thing or a material ‘object’. Is it then a floating ‘medium’?, a simple abstraction, or a ‘pure’ form? No — precicely because it has a content.’

So finally we had the lecture about my subject for the essay. To be honest I went through the slides from last year a dozen of times, so I kind of knew what was coming. But it did make thing a bit clearer. 

In todays class we went through the process of writing an essay. We were also asked to see if we understand the subjects we’ve chosen completely by rewriting the question.

This week’s task was that everyone found a page from a comic we like in our group, then chose one of the others and then draw it in the style of our own comic. Badly explained... 

This is mine. I chose a comic artist called Pedrosa who made a  comic called Portugal. It’s really beautiful. I chose Justine’s one to draw her’s. she picket a comic called Paper Girls.

I went on the Tuesday talk held by Isabel Greenberg this week. It was really inspiring. She talked about her process through making a children's book, that she has four different jobs and how she managed to get her fist book published.

- The one hundred nights of hero

She also shared her love for research and showed us some of the books she has read; Tales of glass town, The book of English magic and A dictionary of fairies.

“Don’t make work you don’t want to work with the next couple of years”

(That’s not exactly how she said it, but more or less. And it’s a good tip.)

The game is the most beautiful game I know about. I played it a few years ago, and I was mind blown and obsessed. The music is wonderful too. 

I’m so happy they talked about it in the exhibition. It was very fascinating to see the research they did and sketches.
