Camp Buddy: thoughts on Hiroâs route
Iâve had Camp Buddy for just over a week now, so Iâve only completed two playthroughs (Hiro, Yoichi) and started a third (Hunter). Might as well ramble some thoughts on my first and so far favourite route, raccoon boy himself.
Why did I pick Hiro for my first route? Well, heâs frickinâ adorable. So energetic and friendly. The food theme is a big plus. But mainly itâs the whole childhood-best-friends-crush thing. Iâve been there more than once when I was younger. What gay dude hasnât?
I thought it would be a cute, fun little game, bit titillating maybe, bit cheesy but ultimately forgettable. I was not expecting to get so emotionally invested in the storyline. Who couldâve thought a plotline about framing someone for snapping an illict picture of someoneâs butt could be so dramatic?! Who wouldâve thought a game like this could be so wholesome, so heartwarming, so uplifting? So funny in parts? Not me, certainly.
This game, frankly, punched me in the balls. Emotionally.
Seriously, if you can listen to âAutumn Raccoon (Slow)â without weeping tears for all the loves youâve ever had and never will have, youâre a robot made of stone.
The worst thing about Hiroâs route is how hard heâs made it to invest in any other playthroughs, though I guess a lot of people have that issue with their favourite character. But when you know his backstory, the reason why he invited Keitaro to camp in the first place and what it means for him if they donât make a connection there, itâs really hard to set the protagonist up with another character. For me, anyway. All those little hurt moments when he tries and fails to get Keitaro to spend time with him. Yeah, heâs clingy, jealous and possessive. Yes, those are not good traits for someone in real life to have. But in an adorable video game character, I find them incredibly endearing. (And relatable. Yes, Iâm a mess.)
Okay, maybe a small, evil part of me does kinda enjoy torturing the poor dude a little bit, but nobodyâs perfect.
What else? The voice acting. Just perfection. Netflixâs She Ra has given me a new appreciation for guys with adorably squawky, uneven, not-quite-broken voices thanks to their character Bow, and Hiro fits that bill to a T. I guess itâs maybe not much of a turn on if youâre playing the game for the sex scenes, but itâs so frickinâ adorable. And as someone whose own voice can sound like that sometimes, it makes me a little bit more comfortable with it.
I love so many of his stock lines. His little snicker. His uneven âooh-kayyâ. The unexpectedly gentle âThatâs all rightâ. And of course, âAnything for you, Keitaroâ and âThatâs my Keitaroâ.
His bickering relationship with Yoichi is one of the highlights of the game for me. Yeah, I ship it.
And thatâs pretty much it! Once I finish all of the other routes I intend to re-play Hiroâs route one last time to finish off my experience with the game - cos as far as Iâm concerned, that shit is canon, baby.
But Iâm never getting the bad ending. No way. It was all I could do to sit through the YouTube video of it. Brrrr.
Anything for You
A Camp Buddy fanfic.
Plot: Hiro hatches a plan to spend more time with Keitaro. Cutesy flirty hijinks ensue, followed by ANGST. Also Yoichi is there.
âAnything for Youâ
Keitaro was abruptly awoken from a dream by something bouncing on his bed. Â For a second he wasnât sure if he was still dreaming or not. Â The dream had been about him and Hiro, alone in the woods together, doing â well, something. Â That part was still foggy. Â The last thing he remembered was Hiroâs face inches away from his own, leaning in close to â what? Â Whisper something? Or had he been moving in for a â kiss?
And now Hiroâs face was still inches from his own, only now his eyes were full of a different kind of excitement.
âKeitaro! Keitaro, wake up!â his best friend squeaked. Â When he got really excited, Hiroâs voice tended to notch up a couple of octaves even higher than normal. Â Keitaro found it endearing, though heâd once joked that only dogs would be able to tell when Hiro was really excited about something.
âH-Hiro?â Keitaro murmured, still sleepy. Â âWhatâs wrong?â
âI just had the best idea!â Hiro grinned. Â He was now kneeling on Kitaroâs bed, excitedly drumming his fists on the covers.
Keitaro yawned. Â âHiro, itâs eight oâclock in the morning,â he moaned. Â âMy brain wonât be working properly for at least another hour.â
âI couldnât wait any longer for you, sleepy-head!â Hiro cried. âIâve been trying to contain myself for the past fifteen minutes!â
âItâs true,â another voice said. Â Keitaro looked across the cabin to where Hunter was sitting up in bed reading, a small smile on the quiet boyâs face.
âWe tried to let you sleep in a bit more,â a third voice said calmly, and Keitaro turned to see Natsumi standing by his own bed. Â Natsumi, of course, was already fully dressed and smoothing down the covers of his duvet. Â âHe just couldnât help himself,â the older boy said fondly.
âKeitaro, canât you shut your stupid Torch-head up?!â Yoichiâs voice growled from underneath the covers of his own bed. Â âItâs bad enough having to listen to him yammering on when Iâm not trying to sleep!â
âNo oneâs talking to you, Wolfboy!â Hiro shot back.
âGrah! You are, and thatâs the problem!â
Hiro grabbed one of the pillows of Keitaroâs bed and was preparing to launch it when Keitaro grabbed his hand. Â He couldnât face round whatever of the two of them bickering this early in the morning.
âHiro, Hiro,â Keitaro said, drawing the other boyâs attention back toward him. Â âWhatâs your big idea?â
Hiroâs face broke into a huge grin again. Â âI was just thinking. Â Whatâs one camp tradition we havenât participated in yet?â
âUhm...â
âGetting eaten by a bear?â Yoichi muttered.
Hiro waved him away with an irritated flick of his hand. Â âWe should have a sleepover!â
There was a pause as Keitaroâs tired brain tried to process this information.
âBut, Hero,â he said at last, âwe already sleep in the same room together. Â Every night.â
âDumbass,â Yoichi muttered.
âItâs not the same,â Hiro insisted. Â âRemember the sleepovers we used to have at my momâs house back in our hometown? Â Remember all the things weâd do? Â Play games, have secret midnight snacks, stay up all night talking! Â We donât do any of that here! Â Most of the time weâre so tired from hiking, or swimming, or whatever activities we do during the day that weâre all sound asleep by nine thirty! Â Weâre missing the best part!â
Despite his tiredness, Keitaro found himself smiling at some of the memories Hiro had conjured up. Â Those nights at Hiroâs house had been some of the happiest heâd ever spent. Â Some of that magic was exactly what heâd been hoping to recapture when he accepted his best friendâs invitation to come to Camp Buddy in the first place.
Hiro caught his smile and began drumming his fists excitedly once more. âThatâs my Keitaro! Â I knew youâd be up for it!â
âGah! Fine!â Yoichi was now sitting bolt upright in bed, the covers thrown back to expose his muscular chest. Â âWeâll all braid each otherâs hair and talk about boys! Â Is that what you want, Torch-head? Â Now shut up and let me get back to sleep!â He rolled over theatrically, hugging the covers about his head.
âI suppose weâll have to invite him too,â Hiro muttered under his breath.
âHiro,â Keitaro chided, âYoichiâs our friend. Â Besides, he sleeps here too.â
âDonât suppose we could tie him to a stake in the yard for a night?â
Hiro didnât see it coming. Â Yoichiâs pillow flew through the air and whacked him on the side of the bed, knocking him clean onto the floor.
âYoichi!â Natsumi scolded. Â âHiro, are you okay?â
âIâm fine,â Hiro muttered as Keitaro helped him to his feet. Â He was clearly embarrassed by the awkwardness of his fall, his cheeks glowing almost as brightly as his orange hair.
âWhat?â Yoichi smirked. Â âIâm just practising for the pillow fights!â

The discussion resumed around breakfast in the mess hall.
âSo what exactly is involved in a âsleep-overâ?â Hunter asked timidly.
âYouâve never been to one?!â Hiro blurted, almost spitting out his mouthful of cereal.
Hunter fiddled with his breakfast, eyes downcast. Â âNo. Â Iâve read about them, but itâs not quite, ah, the same.â
âSleepovers are great,â Keitaro replied. Â âHiro and I used to have them all the time. Â Weâd play video games, sneak down to his momâs kitchen to steal stuff from the refrigerator, then talk all night until the sun came up.â
âWe donât have any video games here, though,â Natsumi said. âThe scoutmasters donât allow technology or gadgets, remember?â
âWe could ask to borrow Setoâs PnesP?â Hiro suggested.
Natsumi frowned. Â âWe shouldnât break the rules.â
âBesides, I doubt heâd let it out of his hands for a night,â Hiro mused. âThat guy has a problem.â
Keitaro, who had vivid memories of staying up 24 hours with Hiro to play their most-anticipated new releases, said nothing and took a bite of toast.
âThere must be something we can play,â Hiro insisted.
âWhat about board games?â Keitaro asked.
âHuh?â
âNatsumi, does the camp have any board games? Â They donât count as technology. Â We wouldnât be breaking the rules if we played Monopoly, right?â
âWellll... I suppose not,â the older boy said, thinking. Â âWe do have a small stash of board games in the scoutmastersâ office. Â I remember Mr Yoshi had to break them out a couple of summers ago when it rained for five days on end. Â I could always ask to borrow -â
âAw, man, you canât ask them!â Hiro complained. Â âThereâs no way theyâll let us stay up late! Â The rules say weâre supposed to be asleep by nine!â
âIâm not going to steal Monopoly!â Natsumi cried.
âWe wouldnât be stealing,â Hunter said softly. Â âJust borrowing it for a night. Â Weâd put it back the next morning, no one would have to know.â
Natsumiâs frown deepened. Â âStill, Iâm not comfortable-â
âCome on, Natsumi!â Hiro begged. Â âPleeeeeease? Youâre robbing Hunter of his first ever sleepover! Â Look at his sad little face, huh?â
Hunter blushed and tried to look fascinated by the crumbs on his plate.
Natsumi folded his arms unhappily. Â âI suppose, provided we are discreet, and it goes back first thing in the morning-â
âAw, thanks, Natsumi! Â Youâre the best! Â Now, what about food? Any ideas, Keitaro?â
âUm. Â I suppose we could save some of our food from dinner and eat that later -â
Hiroâs eyes widened in shock. Â âSave our dinner? Â You mean â go hungry?â
âWell, just for a little while-â
âNo way! Â Weâre supposed to be having an extra treat, not starving ourselves till the middle of the night! Â Hmmm.â Â Hiro cupped his chin, deep in thought. Â âBro Aiden asked me to help him make tonightâs dessert. Â Heâs such a perfectionist it always takes him a few practice runs to get it right. Â I bet I could stash some of the rejects until later, then we could have them to ourselves! Â Yes!â Â Hiro pounded his fist into his palm in excitement. Â âThis plan is finally taking shape!â
âWhat about Yoichi?â Keitaro asked. Â âDo you think heâll go along with this?â Â Their cabinmate had yet to emerge from beneath his pile of bedclothes when theyâd gone for breakfast.
âWhat about Yoichi?â a gruff voice asked from behind, making Keitaro jump.
Yoichi slammed his breakfast tray down onto the table and sat beside them, his face set in its usual grumpy expression.
âWe were just wondering if youâd be joining us for the sleepover,â Keitaro asked.
Yoichi stabbed a sausage onto his fork and swallowed it in two bites. Â âWhat else am I gonna do? Â I sleep over there every night, Frogboy. Â Why should tonight be any different?â
âJust so long as you donât rat us out to the scoutmasters,â Hiro said, narrowing his eyes.
âNot that weâre doing anything wrong!â Natsumi hurriedly interjected.
âHey!â Yoichi pointed his fork angrily in front of Hiroâs face. Â The effect was slightly ruined by the piece of bacon flopping on the end of it. Â âIâm not a snitch, got it? Â You sissies can do what you want. Â Just keep it down while Iâm trying to sleep, okay? I donât need your stupid voice invading my dreams, Torch-head.â
âAw, I bet youâre used to hearing my voice in your dreams every night, Wolfboy,â Hiro replied. Â Before Yoichi could respond, Hiro snatched the piece of bacon off his fork and shoved it into his mouth.
âHEY! Â GIMMIE THAT BACK!â Yoichi snarled jumping to his feet.
Hiro opened his mouth, showing the half-chewed piece of bacon. âCommin geddit if you wantid, Wolfboy!â he laughed, racing off from the table.
âGrrrr! Â One way or another, Iâm taking a bite out of your hide!â Yoichi snarled, chasing after him.
Natsumi watched them go. Â âThis,â he said anxiously, âwas a terrible idea.â
***
The boys went to bed at nine oâclock as usual that night. Fortunately, the dayâs activity hadnât involved anything more strenuous than a gentle nature walk around the camp grounds with Scoutmaster Yoshi pointing out some of the local flora and fauna, so none of them were especially tired when the sun went down. Â They lay in the dark, waiting for the sound of the scoutmastersâ footsteps to retreat from the cabin as they carried out their nightly check of the grounds.
âPsst! Â Keitaro! Â You still awake?!â
âYeah, Hiro!â
âThen whoâs snoring?â
âI, uh, think thatâs Yoichi.â
âWhat? Â Are you sure, Hunter?â
âI think so.â
âAw man! Â Wolfboy couldnât even stay awake for five minutes past lights out!â
âGuys, keep it down! Â The scoutmasters wonât be asleep yet! They might hear us!â
âStop panicking, Natsumi. Â I saw Bro Aiden sneak another crate of alcohol into Sir Yoshiâs office this afternoon. Â Theyâre gonna be focused on their own party, for sure!â
âWait a second. Â Hiro?â
âYeah, Keitaro?â
âYou thought that was me snoring?!â
âUhhh...â
âI donât snore!â
âHehehehe....â
âHunter, stop giggling! Â I donât snore!â
âWellll.... ahhhh.... you kinda do, Keitaro.â
âWhat!!â
âDonât be embarrassed! Â I think itâs cute.â
âAll those sleepovers we had, you never mentioned this!â
âWell, we didnât do a lot of sleeping then! Â I only noticed it when we came to camp!â
âAre they messing with me, Natsumi?!â
âAh...â
âI donât believe this!â
âItâs nothing to be embarrassed about! Â We all do dumb stuff in our sleep. Â Hunter sucks his thumb!â
âWhat?! Â No I donât!â
âAnd Natsumi sleep-cleans.â
âI do what, Hiro?â
âWell, sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night to get a glass of water and youâre sweeping the floor. Â In your sleep. Â Itâs kinda creepy.â
âOh. Â I apologise.â
âAw, donât let it worry you. Â At least it keeps the place neat.â
âWell, what about you, Hiro? Â Donât you ever do anything embarrassing in your sleep?â
âCome on, Keitaro! Â How would I know! Â Iâm asleep, silly!â
âApart from that time you got into the wrong bed.â
âNatsumi!â
âHe what?â
âHe didnât tell you, Keitaro?â
âNatsumi, you promised you wouldnât say anything!â
âI guess Hiro mustâve been going for a glass of water, and when he came back he got into my bed.â
âBy mistake!â
âWell, you kinda snuggled up beside me.â
âI was half asleep! Â I didnât know what I was doing!â
âReally? Â Because you told me I smelled nice and minty.â
â!!â
â...â
â...â
âZzzz ⊠hfnfnn... gnnnnn.... stupid... Torch âŠ. head âŠ. zzzzz ...â
âSo ⊠you just let him sleep there?â
âIâm sorry, Keitaro?â
âYou just let Hiro stay snuggled up beside you in bed all night? You didnât try to wake him up or anything?â
âWell, I, er -â
âYeah! Â Why didnât you wake me up, huh??â
âYou just looked so peaceful! Â And youâd had such a busy day! Sleep is very important, you know!â
âGuys!â
âAll I remember is waking up on the wrong side of the cabin one morning, and you beside the bed already dressed, Natsumi!â
âGuys!â
âHow come you picked his bed of all beds to get into, hmm?â
âGuys!!â
âIt was totally random, Keitaro! Â I swear! Â It could have been anyone!!â
âGuys!!â
âWhat, Hunter?â âThe lights are out in the scoutmastersâ cabin! Â I think we can start our sleepover now!â
âZnnn...gha... snrt.... you mean you dummies havenât already started?! Â Ugh. Â Then what the hell have I been listening to for the past half hour?!â
***
They sat cross-legged in a circle on the cabin floor, their faces lit only by the faint orange glow of one of the campâs emergency storm lamps.
âCanât we turn the lights on? Â I canât really see very well in the dark,â Hunter asked.
âWe canât risk the scoutmasters seeing it through the window,â Natsumi said.
âPssh. Â You need better night vision, Twinkerbell,â Yoichi grumbled.
âThis is better anyway,â Hiro said. Â âIt makes it more atmospheric!â
âYeah, itâs nice and cosy,â Keitaro added.
âPssh. Â Whatever.â
âYou donât have to participate if you donât want to, Wolfboy,â Hiro said. Â âYou can always go back to sleep.â
Yoichi stifled a yawn. Â âNah. Â I want to see how lame your parties are for myself, Torch-head.â
âGnnn. Â Anyway, letâs get started.â Â Hiro produced a large sack from under his bed. Â âI have our snacks in here, though we should probably save them until later. Â Unless anyoneâs hungry now?â Â He looked hopefully around at everyoneâs faces.
âNope.â
âIâm good.â
âI can wait.â
âPsssh.â
Hiroâs face fell slightly. Â âOh. Â Okay. Â Well, I suppose we should start with a game! Â Any luck getting your hands on Monopoly, Natsumi?â
âWelllll, kinda ...â Natsumi said with a grimace as he pulled a cardboard box out from under the bed. Â âIt turns out Monopoly was given away to a yard sale last year, along with most of our other games. Â The only thing I was able to find was, um, this.â
Everyone stared in disbelief at the cover of the box.
âWhat?!â
âHa ha, what the hell!â
âOh my.â
âThatâs, er â where did you find this, Natsumi?â
âIn Miss Yuriâs office,â Natsumi said, blushing.
âWhy am I not surprised,â Yoichi muttered.
âHow exactly do you play â Manopoly?â Hunter asked.
Natsumi removed the box cover, whose art depicted a gleeful young woman surrounded by several scantily-clad bishounen, and took out the instructions.
Natsumi cleared his throat. Â âThe object of the game is to acquire as many male admirers as possible,â he said nervously, âwith the game ending when one player has achieved total â er â manopoly.â
âIs this game for real?!â Yoichi asked.
âI get the impression this is a prototype of Miss Yuriâs own design,â Natsumi said. Â âIt seems to be something she was working on in her spare time.â
âWow. Â Sheâs very creative,â Hunter said.
âThatâs one word for it,â Yoichi muttered.
âWell, since we donât have anything else, itâll have to do!â Keitaro said brightly. Â âHow do we play?â
Natsumi read through the instructions. Â âIt seems we must first choose a game piece to represent us on the board.â
âDoes anyone mind if I be the boot?â
âAh, Hunter? Â I donât think thatâs a boot.â
âOh.â
â...â
âWell Iâll be the sixpack, obviously,â Yoichi said, snatching up the piece.
âIâd like the bouquet of flowers,â Keitaro said. Â âI mean, if no one else wants it?â
âVery appropriate, Keitaro,â Natsumi said, smiling. Â âThat just leaves the box of chocolates -â
âOh, me! Â Me! Â I want those!â Hiro cried.
âYou know theyâre made of plastic, right, Torch-head?â Yoichi said. Â âJust donât try to eat âem.â
Hiro stuck his tongue out at him.
âAnd I guess that leaves me with this,â Natsumi said, looking down at the final piece in his hand. Â âHmm. Â What is this?â
There was an awkward silence around the game board lasting several seconds. Â Finally, Keitaro leant across and whispered something in Natsumiâs ear.
The older boy blushed.  âI ⊠see.â
âOkay, Mr Perfect, so weâve all got our dumb pieces of plastic. What do we do now?â
âAccording to the instructions,â Natsumi said, his cheeks still crimson, âwe roll the dice to determine how many steps we take around the board. Â If we land on a certain square, we have to take a card from this box and do what it says.â
âCool, so itâs just like regular Monopoly then,â Hiro said.
Keitaro picked up one of the cards from the box and read it. Â His eyes widened and he put it back in the pack at the very bottom of the pile.
âNot really,â he said.
***
An hour in and things were getting competitive.
Hiro was vigorously shaking the dice in his cupped hand, his tongue sticking out from the side of his mouth as he concentrated fiercely.
âCome on, six! Â Come onnn, six!â
âHurry up and roll âem, Torch-head,â Yoichi snapped. Â âWe donât have all night!â
âDonât interrupt my ritual!â Hiro said. Â He kissed his knuckles, then bumped them twice against Keitaroâs knee for good luck. Â At last, he rolled the dice onto the board.
âNooo! Â Seven!â
âHa! Â Yes! Â You know what that means, Torch-head!â
âGnnn!â
Angrily, Hiro moved his game piece seven spaces along the board, landing right next to Yoichiâs own piece in the shape of a muscular torso.
âCâmon, fork it over,â Yoichi said, grinning.
âI barely have anything left!â
âNo excuses, loser!â
âGah!â
Reluctantly, Hiro stood up. Â He bent down and peeled off his left sock, then threw it at Yoichi. Â It landed in the middle of the older boyâs forehead, nestled perfectly between the two âearsâ of his messy hair.
âAhhh,â Yoichi said, taking a big whiff of the sock, âsmells like victory.â Â He peeled it off his forehead and added it to the growing pile of clothing items at his side.
âGross, Wolfboy,â Hiro said and sat back down.
Most of those around the game-board were at least half-naked, except for Yoichi (who had only lost a single sock so far) and Hiro, who was down to his underpants. Â The orange-haired boy folded his arms crossly over his stomach and shivvered slightly, more from pent up frustration than cold.
âThis game sucks,â he grumbled. Â âThe rules make no sense!â
âMakes perfect sense to me, Torch-head,â Yoichi said, grinning.
âOnly because youâre winning!â
âAh, youâre just a sore loser!â
âAw, donât feel bad, Hiro,â Keitaro said, putting a consoling hand on his friendâs bare shoulder. Â âYoichiâs beating all of us!â
It was true. Â Keitaro and Natsumi were both bare-chested, though they at least had managed to hold onto their pants. Â Hunter had chosen to go in the opposite direction, clutching his shirt around him as his skinny bare legs poked out from the bottom. Â The night air in the cabin was fairly cool, but none of them could help grinning as the surprisingly fun game built towards its conclusion.
Except for Hiro, of course, who was furious at losing to Yoichi.
âIâm cold,â he complained. Â âCanât I at least have my shirt back?â
âYou know the rules, Torch-head! Â Winner takes all. Â And Iâm the only winner here.â
âBut Iâm freezing! Â Itâs not fair. Â I think youâre cheating, anyway! Â If only-â
âGAH! Â Will you shut up! Â Fine!â
Yoichi stood up abruptly. Â Everyone tensed, expecting his good mood to evaporate as it so often did, expecting him to perhaps kick over the game board and stomp off back to his bed. Â Instead, to everyoneâs surprise, Yoichi pulled his own shirt over his head and held it out to Hiro.
âHere, put this on if itâll stop your whining!â
âHuh?â Hiro blinked up at him in confusion.
âMy shirt! Â Put it on! Â Only over your shoulders, though. Â You have to keep that puny little chest exposed or itâs not a fair punishment for losing.â
Tentatively, Hiro took Yoichiâs shirt and draped it over his shoulders. Â âUm. Â Thanks?â
âPssh. Â Whatever. Â It doesnât count as me giving you my clothes. Youâre still in last place, okay?â Yoichi said, sitting back down at the board.
âOkay. Â Sure,â Hiro said, bewildered.
âFine. Â Now letâs get on with this dumb game, all right? Â Iâm about to win!â
âMaybe, maybe not!â Natsumi said, scooping up the dice and handing them to Keitaro. Â âItâs your turn next, Keitaro!â he said.
âOkay, letâs see,â Keitaro said, taking the dice and shaking them. Â âI need a four to land on the community chest.â
Hunter frowned. Â âCommunity chest? Â They have that in this game?â
âYeah, itâs those cards with the pecs drawn on them.â
âOh, I see.â
Keitaro rolled the dice. Â âTwo and â two! Â A four! Â Yes!â
After moving his game piece onto the correct square he chose a card from the community chest pile. Â âHmmm. Â It says here I have an opportunity to win back a piece of clothing from another player.â
Everyone perked up, suddenly paying attention.
âHow?â Hiro asked.
Keitaro felt his cheeks growing hot. Â âIt says I have to, ah -â
Everyone leaned in closer.
â-well, it says, um, it says I can -â Keitaro stammered, his tongue suddenly feeling out of place in his own mouth.
âOh, for goodnessâ sake, let me read it,â Natsumi said with a smile, taking the card from Keitaro. Â âIt canât be any worse than when I had to do that exotic dance for Hunter.â
Hunter looked at the floor but couldnât stop himself from grinning slightly.
âIt says â oh,â Natsumi stopped. Â He cleared his throat. Â âIt says Keitaro can steal back a piece of clothing from another player â with a kiss.â
Silence fell around the game board as everyone took this in.
Keitaro laughed awkwardly. Â âWell, guys, I mean, we donât have to do it if you donât want to -â
âNO!â the other four cried at once.
Keitaro jumped, startled.
âI mean, those are the rules,â Hunter said.
âRules are very important in life,â Natsumi agreed.
âYeah. Â I love rules,â Hiro said, his eyes wide and staring into Keitaroâs own.
âI got nothinâ to lose,â Yoichi muttered. Â âItâs not like any of you dummies are gonna catch up to me at this rate.â
âSo ⊠who are you gonna choose, Keitaro?â Hiro whispered.
Keitaro swallowed. Â Suddenly the temperature in the room seemed a lot less cool than it had been moments before.
âWell, I canât choose you, Hiro,â Keitaro stammered. Â âYouâve only got one piece of clothing left, and then youâd be out of the game! Â I couldnât do that to you.â
Hiro looked away, crestfallen. Â âGee. Â Thanks, Keitaro.â
âDonât mention it.â Â He smiled weakly. Â âAnd Hunter, well, no offence, but youâre so much younger than us, it just wouldnât feel right.â
âIâm not that much younger!â Hunter protested.
âPssh. Â Please, Twinkerbell. Â You look like one of those kids from Village of the Damned,â Yoichi said.
âStill, I just wouldnât be comfortable,â Keitaro said. Â âNo offense.â
Hunter did his best to smile, yet looked unhappy.
âAnd Natsumi, well, youâre pretty much in the same place as me, clothing wise,â Keitaro said with exaggerated thoughtfulness, âso I guess it wouldnât make much sense to choose you. Â Yâknow, stratetgically.â
âYeah. Â I suppose,â Natsumi said, looking away. âStrategically.â
âSo I guess that leaves ...â
â... Me.â
Yoichi locked eyes with Keitaro from across the game board. Â His muscular chest glistened in the low light of the storm lamp. Â His mouth was cocked to one side in a smirk.
Keitaro gulped.
âY-yeah. Â You, Yoichi.â
Yoichi snickered. Â âAll right. Â Canât argue with your taste, Frogboy. Â Come here, then.â
Feeling like he was a million miles away from his own body, Keitaro got unsteadily to his feet. Â This is really happening, he thought. Â This is really happening!
Yoichi stood up too. Â âWell?â he said. Â âIâm waiting.â
Keitaro picked his way around the game board, trying not to step on anyoneâs legs or upset the pieces. Â He could feel the eyes of the other campers on him as he stepped up to Yoichi. Â The older boy was at least a head taller than him, and Keitaro found himself on eye level with Yoichiâs chest. Â Slowly, he dragged his gaze up to meet Yoichiâs intense violet eyes.
âIf weâre gonna do this,â Yoichi purred, his voice low and rumbling, âweâre gonna do it right.â
Keitaro licked his lips, which suddenly felt impossibly dry. âWh-what do you mean?â he asked in a faint voice.
âI mean,â Yoichi said, taking a step forward and looming over the younger boy, âthat if you want your shirt back, youâre gonna have to earn it, Frogboy. Â Iâm not gonna settle for a peck on the cheek.â
The cabin was so utterly silent that Keitaro could hear the crickets chirping outside. Â This close to Yoichi it was impossible to ignore the older boyâs scent. Â Yoichi would sometimes go a couple of days without bathing, yet somehow he always smelt pleasant to Keitaro. Warm, inviting and a little bit wild. Â He could detect that same faint scent right now, but also what smelt like some of Natsumiâs mint-scented body wash. Â He made sure to have a bath before tonight, Keitaro realised.
And then, before he could have any second thoughts, Keitaro threw his arms around Yoichiâs neck, pulled him close and kissed him.
The older boy was surprised, momentarily caught off guard by Keitaro taking the initiative, but soon recovered. Â He wrapped his own muscular arms around Keitaroâs slender body and pulled him close as their mouthes opened, their tongues met. Â Keitaro thought he heard one of the other campers utter a small, startled gasp before the room dissolved into nothingness beyond Yoichiâs lips.
The kiss went on.
And on.
And on.
Hiro stared. Â If anyone had been observing him, they would have seen his initially surprised expression gradually turn to one of hurt. But then that too began to fade, melting into something else.
Discreetly, Hiro pulled Yoichiâs shirt off his bare shoulders and slid it down to cover his crotch.
***
It was shortly after midnight.
Manopoly had been returned to its box, hidden underneath Natsumiâs bed until he could safely return it to Miss Yuriâs office without anyone noticing. Â The boys remained in their positions on the cabin floor. Â Even after his victory, Yoichi had refused to return any items of clothing to their rightful owners, declaring them the âspoils of warâ. Â He was now reclining beside his hoard with a bored expression, casually twirling Hiroâs underwear around on his finger.
âOkay,â Natsumi said after a long pause. Â âTruth.â
âGyah, not again,â Yoichi complained. Â âYour truths are so boring, Mr Perfect.â
âHey, those are the rules, Wolfboy,â Hiro said. Â âItâs Natsumiâs turn, so he gets to choose.â
âQuit whining, Torch-head, or Iâm taking my shirt back,â Yoichi replied.
Hiro looked like he wanted to respond, but stopped himself at the last moment. Â Having lost his underwear in the final round of Manopoly, he was now wearing Yoichiâs shirt as a makeshift loincloth.
The boys paused as everyone tried to think of an interesting question they could ask Natsumi. Â Finally, Keitaro spoke up.
âOh, I have one!â he said. Â âWhatâs your favourite subject in school?â
The others groaned, except Natsumi who seemed somewhat relieved.
âMath, actually!â Natsumi replied. Â âAlthough I also enjoy-â
âCOME ON, Frogboy!â Yoichi burst out. Â âThatâs your idea of a good Truth or Dare question? Â Youâre supposed to ask something thatâll embarrass them!â
âYeah!â Hiro added.
âAw, guys, I donât want to embarrass Natsumi,â Keitaro said. âHeâs so nice!â
Natsumi beamed. Â âThank you, Keitaro!â
âYou guys suck at this game more than Manopoly,â Yoichi growled. âIâll show you how itâs done. Â Your turn next, Frogboy. Â Truth or dare?â
âUmmm...â
âYou better not try to humiliate Keitaro, Wolfboy,â Hiro warned.
âHey, this stupid sleepover was your dumb idea, Torch-head! Â Iâm just trying to do it right!â
âWell, how would you know how itâs supposed to be done? Â Do they have sleepovers in the jungle?!â
âThatâs it! Â Iâm takinâ my shirt back! Â Come here!â
âHey! Â No! Â Get your hands offa-â
âDARE!â Keitaro blurted.
âHuh?â
Everyone turned to look at him, Hiro and Yoichi paused mid-tussle.
âI choose a dare, Yoichi,â Keitaro said. Â He took a deep breath. âAnd you can make it as embarrassing as you like! Â I can take it!â
âOkayyyy,â Yoichi purred, smirking as they group settled back into their original positions. Â âChallenge accepted.â
Keitaro gulped. Â What have I just gotten myself into? he thought.
Yoichi stroked his chin thoughtfully as the seconds ticked by. Finally, an evil grin spread across his face.
âI got it,â he said.
Oh boy, Keitaro thought. Â Here we go.
âI dare you,â Yoichi said, leaning across the space between them, âto ...â
He paused. Â Everyone held their breath in anticipation.
â... run naked into the Scoutmastersâ office!â
âWhat?!â Keitaro blurted.
âNo way!â Hiro cried.
âThatâs too much!â Hunter whispered.
âYeah, Yoichi, Keitaro canât do that,â Natsumi scolded. Â âHeâd get expelled immediately! Â You need to think of something else.â
âBah, you guys are no fun,â Yoichi said, slumping back. Â âWhatâs the point of daring someone if theyâre just gonna chicken out?â
âN-no,â Keitaro said, standing up. Â âIâll do it!â
âKeitaro, you donât have to do this!â Hiro said. Â âWe donât want you to get kicked out!â
âI wonât get kicked out,â Keitaro said. Â âThe scoutmasters should be asleep by now, right? Â Yoichi only said I had to run naked through their office. Â He didnât say anyone had to see me do it!â
âHaha, thatâs right!â Hiro crowed. Â âHeâs got you there, Wolfboy!â
âPssh, fine,â Yoichi said with a dismissive wave of his hand. âIf you want to do it the sissy way, go ahead.â
âAre you really gonna do this, Keitaro?â Natsumi asked.
Keitaro started removing his pants.
âYep,â he said.
***
The boys stood in the doorway, staring out into the night. Â They watched the slender, pale form of Keitaroâs naked body disppear into the shadows as he ran off towards the darkened scoutmastersâ hut.
âI canât believe heâs doing this,â Hunter breathed.
âI canât believe Wolfboyâs making him do this,â Hiro complained.
âHey, I didnât hold a gun to his head!â Yoichi said. Â Now that Keitaro was actually going through with the dare, Yoichi seemed to have lost some of his former bravado. Â âHe couldâve chickened out if he wanted to! Â This is on him!â
âHeâs made it to the outer office door,â Natsumi said.
âAre you sure? Â I canât see anything!â Hunter asked.
âPoor Keitaro,â Hiro said anxiously. Â âI hope he doesnât get in trouble over this.â
âTch. Â Youâre probably just pissed that you canât get a better look at his junk, Torch-head.â
âI am not!â
âSo you got a good enough look before?â
âYeah â I mean, no! Â I mean, shut up!â
âGuys!â Natsumi warned. Â âKeep it down! Â We donât want to alert the scoutmasters!â
âIs he inside yet?â Hunter asked.
âYes,â Natsumi added. Â âThe door is always left unlocked in case a camper needs to get in touch with one of the scoutmasters. Â I hope he doesnât take too long. Â He only needs to make a quick circuit of the â oh no!â
A light came on in the scoutmastersâ building.
Hunter gasped. Â âTheyâll see him!â
Even Yoichi seemed alarmed. Â âCome on, Frogboy, get out of there! You did it already, get moving!â
âKeitaro!â Hiro cried. Â âIâm coming!â
Yoichi grabbed Hiro by the arm and yanked him back into the cabin before he could go running off towards the other building.
âAre you crazy, Torch-head?!â Yoichi hissed. Â âIf you go over there youâll just make it more likely he gets caught!â
âLet go of me!â Hiro yelled, struggling. Â âWe need to do something! Â We need to cause a distraction! Â I canât let him get kicked out of here, I canât! Â Heâs my best friend!â
âLook!â Natsumi whispered. Â âSomeoneâs coming!â
A pale figure began making its way toward their cabin. Â As it came closer, the boys realised it was Keitaro â still naked, looking somewhat sheepish and holding his hands in front of his groin.
âKeitaro!â Hiro cried, ignoring the other boysâ efforts to shush him  âAre you okay?  What happened?â
âIâm fine, guys!â Keitaro said. Â âUh, nothing to worry about!â
The light in the scoutmasterâs building went off again.
âDid someone see you?â Natsumi asked. Â âWe saw the light go on!â
âActually, I did run into someone, yeah,â Keitaro said nervously. Â âBut everythingâs fine! Â Donât worry about it.â
He was now close enough for them to see a clearly embarrassed expression on his face, and that both of his hands were still covering his crotch, despite the fact that they had all seen each other naked multiple times by now.
âWho did you run into, Keitaro?â Hiro asked.
âAnd â oh my god, what the hell are you wearing?!â Yoichi blurted.
Keitaro was now close enough for the light from the storm lamp to illuminate him more clearly. Â His feet were muddy, his face was bright red â and he appeared to be wearing a pair of frilly pink underpants.
âI ran into Miss Yuri,â he admitted.
Yoichi burst out laughing.
âAre those her panties youâre wearing?!â he asked between gusts of laughter.
âY-yes,â Keitaro said. Â âShe bumped into me just as I was entering the office. Â Sheâd gotten up to use the bathroom. Â I panicked and said I was looking for Hiro.â
âWhat?!â Hiro cried.
Yoichi was now doubled up with laughter.
âOh, this is too much! Â Oh god! Â My sides!â
âWell, you know what sheâs like!â Keitaro said defensively. âSheâs always pretending you and I are a couple! Â It was the first thing that came to my mind!â
âHahahaha! Â Hahahaha! Â Oh god!â
âSo I told her weâd arranged to meet up for a date away from the other campers,â Keitaro said sheepishly. Â âBut Iâd gotten lost in the dark.â
âHahahaha! Â I canât take this!!â
âAnd what did she say to that?â Natsumi asked.
âWellll, first she started kinda â squealing?â Keitaro said. âYou know how she does? Â All high-pitched? Â I was worried she was gonna wake up Sir Goro or the others.â
âHahahaha! Â Panties! Â Little pink panites! Â Hahahahaha!â
âThen she finally calmed down and told me I shouldnât be wandering around naked in the dark. Â She said if I wanted to arrange a secret date with Hiro, she could show me somewhere more appropriate in the morning.â
âHahahaha! Â Oh god! Â I canât breathe!â
âThen she gave me some of her underwear so I wouldnât be naked and told me to go back to bed,â Keitaro finished.
Gasping for breath, Yoichi finally managed to get a hold of himself. âThis is the best day ever,â he sighed.
âGuys?â Keitaro asked. Â âCan you let me back inside before anyone else sees me? Â Please?â
âOh! Â Of course, Keitaro! Â Come in, quick!â Natsumi said.
Back inside the cabin, Keitaro slipped quickly out of Miss Yuriâs panties and threw them hurriedly onto the floor. Â He was searching around for some of his own clothing when Hiro ran up to him and grappled him into a hug. Â There was a slapping sound as the bare skin of their chests bumped together.
âKeitaro, I was so worried about you!â Hiro blurted. Â âThank god youâre all right! Â I could never forgive myself if you got kicked out over this!â
âAw, thanks, Hiro,â Keitaro said, still blushing. Â âBut you donât have to worry! Â Everything worked out okay.â
âExcept Miss Yuri now thinks youâre dating,â Hunter said.
âTch. Â Arenât they?â Yoichi smirked, jerking his thumb toward their embrace.
âUm. Â Hiro? Â Iâm kinda naked here. Â And you pretty much are too.â
âHuh? Â Oh! Â Sure. Â Sorry, heh.â
Hiro released Keitaro from his embrace and stepped back sheepishly.
As Keitaro slipped back into his own underpants, the other boys took up their former positions on the floor. Â Natsumi yawned and Hunter rubbed his eyes.
âWell, I think thatâs enough excitement for one night!â Natsumi said. Â âI donât know about you guys, but Iâm bushed.â
âY-yeah,â Keitaro said. Â âMe too.â
âAw, but guys!â Hiro exclaimed. Â âItâs still early! Â And we didnât even get to eat the food I brought yet!â
âThatâs okay, Hiro,â Keitaro said. Â âIâm not that hungry. You can have my share.â
âMine too,â Hunter added.
âItâs not healthy to eat this late at night, anyway,â Natsumi said.
âBut, guys! Â We still have to-â
âForget it, Torch-head,â Yoichi said, yawning and stretching. âThe sleepover is over. Â And I think we can all agree who owned the night. Â Me! Â I won Manopoly, I won Truth or Dare! Â Face it, Torch-head, I dominated your entire lame party.â
The other boys began making their way towards their beds, oblivious to Hiroâs mounting anger.
âNO!â he yelled.
Everyone turned back to face him, surprised.
âHiro?â Keitaro asked. Â âAre you okay?â
âNo, I am not okay!â Hiro shouted. Â âIâm sick of this! Â Every time I try to do something with you, he makes it all about him! Â Iâve had enough of it!â
âHey, donât blame me because your party sucked-â Yoichi started.
âSHUT UP!â Hiro screamed. Â âJUST SHUT UP, CANâT YOU?! Â WHY DOES EVERYTHING ALWAYS HAVE TO BE ABOUT YOU!â
Yoichi looked startled, his expression that of a dog who has chased a raccoon into a corner, only for the raccoon to pull out a switchblade.
âKeitaro is my best friend! Â Iâm the one who invited him here! Â Iâm the one who keeps trying to find ways to make amazing memories with him, but itâs you who keeps interfering! Â He keeps picking you over me every time, and YOU DONâT EVEN CARE!â
Silence fell like a thunderclap in the cabin. Â The boys were frozen in place, none of them daring to move. Â Hiroâs bare chest rose and fell with deep breaths and there were tears in his eyes.
âHiro, I-â Keitaro started to say, but trailed off helplessly.
Hiro looked at him. Â Tears began to spill over his eyelashes. Â He swiped them away angrily with his forearm, but they continued to run down his cheeks.
âWhy couldnât it be me, Keitaro?â he whispered. Â âWhy canât you ever pick me?â
They stood in a frozen tableau for seconds that seemed like an eternity.
âTorch-head,â Yoichi said, âcome on. Â It was just a lame party. Â Get over it.â Â His voice, to everyoneâs surprise, was oddly kind.
Hiro took a deep, shuddering breath. Â âYeah, well,â he said, âpartyâs over.â
They watched him walk out of the cabin and into the night, door closing behind him, none of them having the slightest clue what to say.
***
Hiro walked. Â He had no idea where he was going and didnât much care. Â He just let his feet carry him as far as they could from that stupid cabin and that stupid Wolfboy and that stupid Keitaro -
I canât believe I just thought that about Keitaro, he realised. Â Itâs not his fault. Â He didnât do anything wrong. He didnât do anything at all.
And isnât that the problem? another part of his mind ventured. Â He didnât do anything. Â He never does anything. Â He didnât ask you to come here. Â He never tries to find ways to spend time with you. Â Most of the time heâs looking for the first opportunity to ditch you for anyone that comes along, even that jerk Yoichi. Â He never defends you when Wolfboy picks on you either, does he? Â He only pipes up when you fight back. Â Whatâs it gonna take for you to realise it, Hiro? Â He doesnât like you. Â At least not the way you like him. Â You guys were friends once, but thatâs all youâll ever be. Â And maybe not even that anymore.
Then the tears were coming again, thick and fast, blinding him so much that he had to stumble up against the nearest available tree to catch his bearings. Â Mentally exhausted, he slumped down into a sitting position against the tree, head bent forward, feeling the warmth of his tears fall onto his bare chest and stomach.
He was so lost in his own misery that he didnât hear anyone approach until a shadow loomed over him, blotting out the moonlight.
âK-Keitaro?â Hiro asked.
âPssh. Â No. Â Sorry to disappoint you, Torch-head.â
Hiro rubbed the tears from his eyes until his vision cleared enough for him to see Yoichi standing over him. Â He scowled.
âGo away,â Hiro said. Â âI donât want to talk to you.â
âWell, tough,â Yoichi said.
Hiro looked away, determined to ignore him. Â After a couple of seconds he heard Yoichi sigh before sitting down beside him, back leaning against the tree trunk.
Yoichi dumped something into Hiroâs lap, forcing him to look down.
âI brought your clothes.â
Only now did Hiro realise how cold he was. Â Goosebumps were rising all over his exposed skin. Â Nonetheless, he refused to acknowledge Yoichiâs gesture.
âArenât you gonna say thank you?â
Hiro sniffed and continued to ignore the other boy.
âWhat, youâre just gonna sit here and freeze to death? Â Just to be stubborn?â
Then, to Hiroâs surprise, Yoichi started laughing softly to himself.
âI gotta admit, Torch-head. Â You donât give up. Â Even when you really, really should.â
Hiro couldnât help himself. Â âYou mean Keitaro, donât you?â
âAmong other things.â
Hiro shook his head. Â âYouâd like it if I gave him up, huh? Â So you could have him all to yourself. Â Until you get bored of him and move on to something else.â
Yoichi sighed. Â âThatâs not what I meant.â
âOh yeah? Â So what did you mean then, huh?â
Yoichi paused. Â âI only meant â ah, whatâs the point. Â Youâll never listen.â Â Yoichi stood up. Â âFreeze to death if you want, I donât care. Â Later, Torch-head.â
âNo, say it!â Hiro yelled, jumping to his feet as well. Â âSay what you always mean when youâre picking on me in front of him! SAY IT!â
âAll right, fine!â Yoichi snarled. Â âYou want me to say it? Heâs not good enough for you!â
âI KNEW IT!â Hiro yelled, jabbing a finger accusingly at Yoichiâs chest. Â âI knew it! Â All this time! Â Running me down! Making fun of me! Â Trying to make me look stupid! Â All so you could have Keitaro to yourself! Â Well for your information, Iâm just as good as you, Wolfboy! Â And one day Keitaro will see that for himself!â
Yoichi shook his head. Â âYouâre not listening to me, dumbass. Â I said heâs not good enough for you.â
âOh yeah?! Â Well I think â huh?â Hiro suddenly stopped in mid-rant, his finger pausing in mid-air.
Yoichi stood with his hands in his pockets, waiting for Hiroâs brain to process the shift in gears.
âBut â I â you â I mean â huh?â Hiro stammered.
âTorch-head,â Yoichi sighed wearily. Â âPut your damn clothes on. Â I canât have a serious conversation like this.â
Yoichi turned his back. Â Not out of any sense of respecting his privacy, Hiro realised, but because he seemed more uncomfortable being honest than staring at another guyâs body. Â Hiro began to get dressed while Yoichi spoke.
âHeâs not good enough for you,â Yoichi said. Â âOr â I dunno â maybe not right is a better way of saying it. Â Iâm not great with words, okay? Â Gah! Â This is so fucking-â Â Yoichi paused, took a few deep breaths and tried again. Â âHeâs not what youâre looking for, and youâre not what heâs looking for. Â Not right now, anyway. Â Keitaro wants to explore himself. Â He wants to meet new people and have new experiences. Â Do things heâs never done before. Â Heâs not ready to settle down with one person.â
Hiro finished dressing himself and tossed Yoichi his shirt. Â The other boy put it on and then turned to face him.
âYouâre different,â Yoichi said. Â He was now looking him directly in the eye and seemed to be almost pleading to be understood. Â Hiro had never seen him like this before. Â He wasnât sure if this was even happening or if it was all some crazy dream. Or a prank, his mind suggested. Â Itâs all part of some prank. Â Heâs reeling you in so he can pants you or something by the end of it. Â Maybe the other guys are waiting behind a tree over there, just ready to jump out and laugh at your reaction.
Yet the expression in Yoichiâs eyes seemed to deny that possibility.
âYouâre different, Hiro,â Yoichi said again, stepping closer this time. Â âYouâre loyal. Â You think I donât see that? Â You stick by people. Â You care about them. Â You care for them. You make an effort. Â Youâre always cooking for him, or talking to him, or thinking of something you guys could do together. Â And it kills me to see him not appreciate it! Â I get it, Frogboyâs not looking for that right now. Â But some people never get that kind of thing in their lives. Â From anyone.â
Yoichi dropped his eyes.
âI didnât,â he said quietly. Â âIâve never had anyone who cared about me like that. Â Not anyone human, at least,â he added. âYou just need to find someone who wants what youâre offering.â He raised his eyes again to meet Hiroâs gaze, and there was a flash of the old Yoichi in them once more. Â âSo stop feeling sorry for yourself and have a little fucking self-respect, okay, Torch-head?â
Hiro was too stunned to respond.
âWell?!â Yoichi snarled. Â âArenât you gonna say anything?â
âWow,â Hiro said eventually. Â âI think thatâs the longest youâve ever gone without calling me Torch-head. Â Until the end, anyway.â
Yoichi snickered and shook his head.
âI donât get it, Yoichi,â Hiro said uncertainly. Â âAre you saying you â you like me?â
Yoichi looked as though Hiro had asked him what colour the sky was. âWhat kind of stupid question is that?! Â Of course I like you, dumbass! Â I wouldnât be out here if I didnât like you!â
âBut youâre always so mean to me!â Hiro cried. Â âYouâre always insulting me and fighting with me!â
âWell, yeah! Â Because itâs fun!â Yoichi said, as though this was the most obvious thing in the world. Â âDonât you like fighting with me?â
âI guess. Â Sometimes?â
âAnd who else am I supposed to fight with? Â Mr Perfect just smiles when I insult him. Â Frogboyâs too polite to insult. Â And Twinkerbell cries if I look at him funny. Â At least you can take it! You even fight back!â
Hiro felt like the world had turned inside out. Â Nothing made sense anymore. Â Left was right, up was down, and Yoichi was being nice to him. Â While still, somehow, yelling at him.
âSo, if you like me, why did you kiss Keitaro?â Hiro asked.
âUh, he kissed me,â Yoichi said. Â âRemember?â
âWell, you didnât exactly fight him off!â
Yoichi shrugged. Â âWhy would I? Â Heâs hot!â
Hiro laughed resignedly to himself. Â âYouâre an animal, Wolfboy.â
He turned toward the tree and rested his back against it, slumping down into a sitting position once more.
âHeâs never gonna like me back, is he?â Hiro asked quietly. âNot like I want him to.â
Yoichi sighed. Â He picked up a paper bag that was resting at his foot and came to sit beside Hiro, leaning against the tree.
âHow the hell should I know, Torch-head? Â Iâm not psychic.â
They sat in silence for a few moments.
âIs everyone okay back at the cabin?â Hiro asked.
âYeah. Â Why? Â You think they were all shitting themselves after your dramatic exit?â
âNo. Â Well. Â Maybe.â Â He paused. Â âDid Keitaro-â
âHe was gonna come. Â I said I would. Â Figured I owed you an apology.â
âI guess I should apologise too. Â Kinda ruined the mood back there.â
âYeah. Â For a second I thought you were gonna take a swing at me.â
âScared you, huh?â
âPssh. Â Hardly. Â You probably woulda missed me and knocked Twinkerbell out cold.â
âYou know, you didnât actually apologise yet.â
âI didnât?â
âNuh uh.â
âFine. Â Here.â Â Yoichi tossed the paper bag into Hiroâs lap.
âWhatâs this?â
âItâs the stuff you brought earlier. Â Your âmidnight snackâ, remember?â
âOh!â Â Hiro checked his watch. Â âKinda past midnight now.â
âSo? Â You telling me youâre not hungry?â
âActually ...â
Hiro reached into the bag and produced a chocolate-coated, cream-filled doughnut. Â The glaze glowed brightly in the moonlight.
âWant one?â he asked.
Yoichi reached for the doughnut. Â Before his fingers could touch it, Hiro shoved the whole thing in his mouth, smearing cream and chocolate across his face as he did so. Â He grinned at Yoichi through a mouthful of doughnut.
âDamn, Torch-head. Â How much can you fit in there?â Yoichi asked.
âMebbe yull fin doubt,â Hiro mumbled through a cloud of crumbs.
He offered Yoichi the bag and let him take one this time. Â They stayed beneath the tree, eating doughnuts until the bag was empty, before heading back to the cabin.
***
âHiro! Â Are you okay? Â Iâm so sorry I-â
âIâm fine, Keitaro. Â Donât worry.â Â Hiro smiled weakly. Â âI feel so embarrassed. Â I guess my blood sugar was running a little low or something.â
âOh. Â Are you sure youâre all right?â Â Keitaroâs concerned expression felt like being stabbed through the heart. Â Hiro steeled himself, determined not to give in to the feelings rising in his chest.
âYeah,â he said. Â âIâm fine.â
A buddy always shows a bright smile on his face, Hiro thought. Â He stretched his face into a grin, a grin which felt more genuine when Keitaro embraced him in a hug.
âWell, good. Â Iâm glad youâre feeling better. Â Tomorrow weâll do something fun, okay? Â Just you and me!â
âThanks, Keitaro,â Hiro said. Â âBut thatâs okay. Â Weâre here to make new friends, right?â
Hiro turned to gesture towards Yoichi who was closing the cabin door after their return.
âRight!â Keitaro said. Â âLike this sleepover! Â It really was a lot of fun. Â Before, yâknow -â
Hiro winced. Â âYeah. Â Before I ruined it.â
âAh, donât beat yourself up, Torch-headâ, Yoichi said before throwing himself onto his bed. Â âIâve been to worse parties.â
âI think Miss Yuri might be on to something with her Manopoly game,â Natsumi said. Â âI could see it being a big hit.â Â He was picking up the storm lantern off the floor. Â âIâll just make sure and turn this off once everyone is ready for bed. Â We donât want to get caught out if there was a real emergency!â
While the others got undressed for bed â except Hunter, who was already tucked up and asleep, and Yoichi, who was snoring fully-clothed on top of the covers â Keitaro crept over to Hiroâs side again.
âAre you sure youâre okay?â Keitaro whispered.
âIâm fine,â Hiro said. Â âHonest. Â Yoichi and I had a good talk out there.â
âYouâd tell me if there was anything still wrong, right?â
âOf course.â Â Hiro smiled his brightest buddy smile. Â âAnything for you, Keitaro.â
Keitaro nodded, seeming to accept this, and left to change into his sleeping clothes. Â Hiro finished changing and got into his own bed.
Anything for you, he thought sadly to himself, staring up at the cabin ceiling.
Natsumi turned off the light.
