Everybody else is people too
For the past couple of months I've been having dreams at night where I get to hang out with with famous people that I really admire: I've hung out on a city balcony with rapper, LL Cool J who demonstrated his self-awareness by telling me through a big smile that he knows people comment on how much he licks his lips when I asked if he knew what people said about him. I've overlooked New York City on a roof with YouTuber, Casey Neistat whom when I shook my head and asked him how in the world he stays so prolific, shrugged cooly and responded, "It's nothing special. I just do it. I start." And most recently I attended an art party with Arsenal Football Club left back, Nacho Monreal, a Spaniard. I had on a denim jacket and he was wearing the current Arsenal red & white Puma home kit, cleats, socks and all. We stood a few yards outside the entrance to the party speaking fluent Castilian Spanish to each other. I said, "You know, you don't have to go in if you don't want to have people recognizing you and treating you differently." He replied, "Don't worry. I'm no different than anyone in there. I'm just a person just like everyone else." I love dreaming. I especially love when I remember dreams. And I'm a firm believer that in the vulnerability of our subconscious during sleep, insights can be shared and more readily received. The common theme I feel like is being shared with me through these dreams I've been having with celebrities is encouragement that we're all people. Celebrity or no, people are people. And because everybody else is people too, it's not good for us to make assumptions about a person's character, nor should we tear ourselves or our abilities down out of comparison to others. So next time you get caught in a self-inflicted death spiral of the comparison game, remember my dream buddies, and take comfort in knowing that we all on this earth have something in common... We're all people.
