Three Movies I’ve been on about in the month of April:
- Lux Æterna (2019, top): A film set goes awry when producers and cameramen take over a women’s directorial debut. Loved what this movie showed in terms of what can sometimes go in to a “good acting performance” which is normally short of torturing actors and crew. Its less than an hour but those strobing colors are like eye candy for me (may cause headaches for others). I haven’t really seen split screens and audio meshing used this way either, cool stuff.
- Morvern Callar (2002, bottom left): A women loses her boyfriend to suicide and then goes on vacation while listening to cassette tape he made her for Christmas. I’ve seen this movie twice now and it’s literally peak visual storytelling telling/poetry to me. Morvern’s version of grief isn’t one you see a lot of. She’s not one to cry or really talk about what happened, which might seem boring or dissociative to most viewers. I like to think it’s the opposite, she’s painfully present but the present has left her with no words or reactions. She listens to the cassette trying to find her place in a new world, no flashbacks necessary…soundtrack is flames too.
- Bad Education (2004, bottom right): Two friends reconnect over their Catholic Boarding school days and things turn into a modern homo film noir. Sick and twisted, but Almodovar’s gaggiest I think. Again he gives these characters so much empathy, something very similar to Mysterious Skin. This is wayyy less brutal of a watch but I’d argue it’s equally heavy. I love how Almodovar balances the heavy and lighter tones in his movies. He uses that to betray the audiences trust here, something I haven’t seen him do, and I was left with my mouth ajar. Normally that kind of thing comes off as exploitative, but I don’t knowww it’s kinda hit perfectly for meee. All this without mentioning how I wanna take a bite out of everything on screen, it’s that good-looking.
~ maybe I’ll do this every month or so, i feel like i can’t really talk like this on letterboxd or anywhere else. Most of these are on Tubi or Kanopy rn!
