God, Buster Keaton!

Buster Keaton with his second wife Mae Elizabeth Scrivens. Supposedly at the ceremony (the second ceremony: they were married first in Mexico then in California), the clerk asked for his profession.

Buster said, “Well, some people will argue about it, but I’m a motion picture actor.”

When the clerk turned to Mae, she automatically gave her profession: “Nurse.” However, everyone thought that she’d said “Nerts,” a slang interjection that means, “Nonsense” or “Yeah, right.”

Oh, Buster. Your solemnities were never solemn, were they?
