If you're in the mood for a hidden gem that will completely pull at your heartstrings, you need to add I Am David to your watchlist.

Based on Anne Holm's classic novel North to Freedom, the film follows 12-year-old David (played with such raw gravity by Ben Tibber) as he makes a daring escape from a 1950s Bulgarian labor camp. Armed with nothing but a compass, a piece of bread, and a sealed letter he must deliver to Denmark, he steps into an outside world he knows absolutely nothing about.

What makes this movie so touching isn't just the physical survival—it's David’s emotional journey. He's a boy who was taught to "trust no one," who doesn't even understand the concept of a smile. Watching him slowly let his guard down through the kindness of strangers (including a wonderful performance by Jim Caviezel as his camp mentor, Johannes, and Joan Plowright as a gentle Swiss artist) is beautiful and heartbreaking all at once.

It’s an incredible story about resilience, finding hope in a broken world, and the sheer power of human kindness.
