THIS IS MY FUCKING HOUSE!
The Princess Bride (1987) dir. Rob Reiner
A.C. Strip has long understood the significance of the diary his older brother kept as they fled the Holocaust with their parents. He turned it into a self-published book that he gave to his brother as a 90th birthday gift.
But Strip never considered the diary to be an important historical document. The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum is making him rethink that.
Stripâs brotherâs journal is one of more than 200 diaries written by Holocaust victims and survivors the museum hopes to digitize and make available to the public with the help of its first crowd-funding campaign. The museum is seeking $250,000 for the project and will begin soliciting donations through Kickstarter on Monday, the birthday of the most famous Holocaust diarist, Anne Frank.

If their goal is reached, their entire diary collection will be catalogued, translated, and published online for EVERYONE. They hope to stem holocaust denial by the power of so many readily-available firsthand accounts.

This is such an interesting dissection of a very common trope in writing female characters that I never really thought about before, but itâs so prevalent and so obvious and so fucking disgusting.

Breaking news: The D.C. Appeals Court just killed Net Neutrality. This could be the end of the Internet as we know it. But it doesnât have to be. Tell the FCC to restore Net Neutrality: http://bit.ly/1iOOjoe
they want to make the internet like tv. with channels and paying to get to specific websites and things. net neutrality = not doing that
This impacts every internet user. Please signal boost the hell out of this and sign the petition if you are American
I do not reblog things like this very often, but this affects me both personally and my business as a freelance artist.
In the economy here; cash is already strapped as it is. You bet your ass companies would suck the ever living life out of misc. art sites.
I donât want it to ever come down to me choosing between groceries or purchasing a new tier package via comcast to be able to access tumblr or DeviantArt (let alone not guaranteeing Iâll even be seen by my customer base since they may not want to pay out their asses either). It doesnât seem important to most, but I do 90% of my business online entirely.
Please sign up, fight for this and share it with your followers/friends/family and urge them to give them hell as well.
Not writing related, but this is incredibly important. While we pay for service via ISPs, the internet has been a relatively free space where everyone, no matter their income level, is able to connect, access a wealth of information, and express themselves. The Internet has become a major part of our culture as human beings and the notion that ISPs might be able to limit what sites I can access unless I pay them more is utterly sickening. A lot of us are cash strapped as is, and Iâd rather not be limited even more by someone elseâs greed. Net Neutrality is essential and I hope you guys will understand why it needs to remain.

P.S. Signal boost this if youâre able.

As I understand this ruling, it means that businesses now have to pay extra to ISPs to have access to their websites through that ISP provided at a reasonable speed. If you donât pay, usersâ access to your website will be slowed to a crawl - so independent people and small businesses can forget about getting onto that high speed access tier.Â
This means that the American internet is going to be firmly under the control of those who have the most money. Youâll only get to see the content of those who can pay the ISPs to provide access at a reasonable speed. This means that you can expect to see skewed representation of just about everything, with those bigger businesses who can afford to pay ISPs a premium for access deciding what you can and cannot read, view and consume on the internet.
This is not something that we have in the UK. Our ISPs compete with each other to provide higher speeds, better services and lower prices, but because thereâs a monopoly in the US of a few ISPs who provide services, they can afford to do this to you. You canât go anywhere else, after all.
Everyone in the US needs to sign that petition, call their representatives, write angry letters and do whatever you can to tell your government that this ruling is Not Okay.
Maybe you guys are sick of this post but Itâs really important to freelance artists and pretty much everyone who uses the internet, so here it is again. Â \o0o/
friends: wow you havenât talked about Hamilton in a while!
me:Â
good job giving them all that money suckers. its almost like this could have be forseen by looking at how the ACLU has approached nazism and white supremacy for the entire history of the organization but that might involve a single critical thought
they also protect rapists. My city was/is threatened with a lawsuit from them cause the city has stricter rules about where rapists/sex offenders can live than the norm and apparently ACLU considers it a violation of the rapistsâ rights since effectively they canât live in the city cause there are so many schools and the school zones overlap.Â
The funny thing about constitutional rights is that they still apply to terrible people.
Believe me, when constitutional rights are not protected, nazis and rapists are not the ones that suffer the most, its religious and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ people and left wing activists.
But hey, rally against your own rights to punish rapists and nazis, and watch how quickly theyâre forgiven and weâre the ones pursued. Happens every single time.
The ACLU isnât perfect but theyâre vital to the US and that this canât be understood means they either donât get law or donât get how law interacts with society.
Legally we need ALL speech free, on a governmental level.
Sorry. It would probably delight Milo Yappyweinerdog to NO end to get some kinda ruling against free speech so the people he is playing troll for could immediate turn around and use it against those they hated. You knowâŚus? At what point do you think âThe Government had the right to control what a person can talk about.â is going to work out in the favor of minorities? You know, the Government currently run by Trump? You wanna give him that power so you donât have to deal with Milo Yappyweinerdog showing up on your facebook feed?
Itâs not like that doesnât mean the rest of us canât tell him where to shove it.
Re: the ACLU and the rapists, Iâm assuming you live in San Diego and youâre talking about the In Re Taylor case.
Hereâs the thing: under Meganâs Law, registrants on the 290 registry (âsex offendersâ) were barred from 97% of available housing, and the remaining 3% was often not available to them because, understandably, not many private landlords want to rent to people with sex offenses. What that effectively meant is that registrants, including people who were registered for sex work, public indecency or Romeo-and-Juliet violations, were being forced into homelessness by the government. Because if you are on parole and on the registry, you canât just decide not to live in San Diego. Youâre ordered, by the government, to live in the county youâre assigned to until youâre transferred or off parole. If not, you go back to prison. So what this meant is that San Diego had a huge homeless population of people with sex offense convictions. People who were living on boats - not yachts, but literal canoes - tied to random docks because it was the only place they could live without being thrown back in prison. And you know who suffers from this? Not just the registrants, but the public. Public safety is not enhanced by making people homeless. People who cannot live anywhere legally will drop off the grid and dodge their supervision. They wonât check in with their parole officers. They wonât bother to follow the law. Theyâll commit more crime just to go back to jail so they have a roof over their head and shitty bare-bones medical care. Theyâll steal and lie and beg so they can get enough food to fill their stomachs and theyâll get involved in trafficking and drug-dealing and worse just so theyâll be able to rest their head at night. What the court found in In Re Taylor, which decided the California registration requirements were unconstitutional, was that those registration were putting more people at risk. It put registrants at risk of homelessness and it put the public at risk of registrants breaking supervision and committing survival crime. The ACLU understood that treating everyone with human dignity and freeing people from oppressive government action - even convicted rapists - was in the internet of public safety. Human rights apply to everyone, even nazis and people convicted of sex offenses. The question should never be âdoes this person deserve to have their rights taken away?â. The question should be âdo we trust the government to take those rights?â. A government with a history of racism, classism and transphobia, with documented history of suppressing leftist voices? Right now I donât trust the government with a plastic fork, and neither does the ACLU.
i am sitting here thinking about how âformer sex workers should be allowed to live indoorsâ got turned into âthe ACLU loves rapists and thinks theyâre greatâ and i suspect some right-wing spin control happened in the middle of that process
when the people trying hardest to protect your rights somehow turn out to be Ultra Super Problematic and youâre being encouraged to throw them under the bus, you need to stop and think real hard about why thatâs happening and whoâs trying to make it happen
the Angry Young Activist tendency to demonize anything that isnât a perfect snowy shrine of absolute purity ultimately works in favor of the bad guys, because absolutely no one who does real work out in the world is completely unproblematic â LIFE is not unproblematic â so they get you to reject everything genuine and embrace useless symbols, or just get disillusioned and give up
you need to be able to see the value in things like âprotecting the constitutional rights of everyone, even assholesâ and âsupporting candidates who, while not perfect, are better than their opponentsâ because boy howdy did rejecting clinton because she wasnât flawless not work out for us
