Feferi wouldn't be a good ruler, Beforus's ruler was her in a way and they let a child sew his mouth shut.
THANK YOU??? FOR KNOWING THIS??? SHE WOULD LITERALLY BE TERRIBLE. THE WORST. Okay maybe not THE worst but seriously, Feferi is just as fucked as The Condensce, but in a really subtle way, and that’s t h e w o r s t way to be fucked up, because people don’t know until it’s already too late. I was planning on making an Eridan Analysis post where I also kinda analyzed Feferi with some evidence but seriously, she cannot be trusted. Ya I have fear. Ya I do not want her Near me. Everyone is like OH SHE IS SO SWEET!!! NO. No, you don’t realize you Fools. She is Worse than Eridan. Holy McGarbage
Also, in most timelines including the canon timelines Eridan is often forced into a state of self evaluation, and has to come to the realisation that what he did was wrong, and often ends up becoming better for it. Feferi on the other hand never does. She never has to question her morals or what consequences her actions of making every troll dream of horrorterrors and having them guard/create the dreambubbles. She never has to think about what she has done, while a lot of fanfics talk about it, it never happens in canon. She just doesn’t seem to care about others unless it directly affects her.
You. You get it. You notice it. Holy shit, Eridan is literally forced to evaluate his actions as soon as he makes them, by literally everyone. He’s forced to evaluate things he hasn’t even DONE yet. Eridan is always making progress and he’s just trying his hardest to get attention from his friends, and his belief that landdwellers are lesser is… fake? It’s fake. It’s literally so obvious that it’s another scream for attention AND something he adopts because he’s been forced into the Orphaner role, and he has to justify murdering SOMEHOW or he’ll go insane. Dude’s been forced into trauma and danger for Feferi’s needs, dragged along in a moirailship he gave more to than he ever got back from because it was convenient for Feferi to get more out of him that way, run through the wringer because he STILL didn’t give enough, and bashed on the head for being a violetblood and a freak and the incel he actually never was. He was more accommodating to people’s needs than anyone ever bothered to notice, and never asked for too much in return.
FEFERI, however, was constantly instilling her views subtly into everyone, spilling sensitive emotional information that was given to her in confidence because she just needed to talk about it, drilled it into Eridan’s head that he wasn’t good enough for much of anything, and tried to force people to do things they weren’t comfortable with. Eridan was NOT comfortable around Feferi. Eridan was NOT willing to confide in her, and I wholeheartedly believe he was in a situation much like Kanaya and Vriska in PesterQuest, only more abusive. Feferi is a literal threat going unchecked.
So as someone who’s also writing on the Ampora backstory, I thought it would only be fair to add onto this, so here goes!
If no one here had gotten the hard copies of Homestuck, there is a plug-in for Chrome and FireFox to have the Author’s notes show on the comic online. I say this because it gives us more insight on the comic that we usually don’t see, I highly recommend this plug-in to anyone that wants the extra depth. And of all the things in Eridan’s introductory section, there are two things about Eridan I want to point out:
When we meet him and his lusus, we are told by Hussie that Eridan [Objectively] has the best lusus. Only in the premise that he has the ability to fly. That’s quite literally it. And we know how much Hussie loves the Skyhorse. We get nothing on their relationship or how good of a caretaker that lusus is, just that ‘Oh, cool, he can fly!’. Later on, we get some information on his hive. According to the notes, his hive used to work! It was a mobile ship and everything, but it shipwrecked and he ‘never actually did anything about it, or simply wasn’t able to’.
I also like the fact you pointed out how he has to defend his decisions so hard. That feels very important because of how hard he stands by certain beliefs. How quick he is to stand for his caste and how hard he denies magic. The way he talks about both is very interesting, because his actions always contradict his statements. He’s so quick to say how magic is fakey fake bullshit, yet he quite literally dresses like a wizard and goes so far to make a working wand, but it’s not magic, right? He gets by by calling it ‘science’. But he knows it’s magic, he can’t deny that. With his casteright, let’s call it, he’s so quick to say how landdwellers are beneath him and he even knows how easy it would be to exterminate the landdwellers, and he doesn’t becuase ‘that would only make [Feferi] mad’. Now, if he was that hellbent to his cause, wouldn’t he have just gone through with it and said ‘you can thank me later’? Because it’s based on a belief that was instilled into him that he doesn’t truly believe.
Actions speak louder than words and Feferi knows that. If he wants her so badly, why doesn’t he confide in her instead of Karkat? She notices how he keeps her at a distance and knows their quadrant isn’t working because he trusts Karkat more than her. And based on how she acts with Sollux with his personal information, I can understand why: she can’t be bothered to treat it seriously. Matter of fact, I’m willing to bet at one point he did come to her, but she dismissed it or did not give helpful advice (one of those ‘why are you depressed? you need to cheer up!’ kind of people). But if she doesn’t care and doesn’t take him seariously, why bother wanting the Matespritship in the first place? Because she’s the Heiress. Because she’s the only one that, in his belief system, is good enough. But he doesn’t even follow that belief system. He is all talk until he goes insane and starts killing everybody except Karkat.
But isolation can do that to you, can’t it?
It feels like, once upon a time, Eridan DID believe in Magic and he DIDN’T CARE about the caste system, but he was forced to change. He had to become an Orphaner for Feferi. And Orphaners don’t believe in wriggler bullshit like Magic. It’s fakey fake bullshit. And it was drilled in for the longest time, most likely by Feferi and his lusus. He was manipulated to be something she needed. But that’s what witches do: they manipulate their aspect. She manipulated Eridan’s life to be what she needed and, as the Heiress, felt no need to face repercussions for her actions. And she still doesn’t.
All Eridan needed was for someone to show a little faith in him. He needed someone. But Karkat wasn’t always able to be there and evryone else either took him as a joke or just didn’t care. Being on a ship stranded on an island and having no one close to go to, how is he going to get better without a network of peers to help him out of his situation? Better yet, who’s going to help a Genocidal Orphaner?
But he was just a kid. And no one understood that.
Eridan didn’t just come from a sunken ship.
Eridan came from a broken home.
