Something most of us forget from time to time: how do I center an element in CSS š¤
I was asked to make a masterpost on websites like Codecademy, so Iāve tried to compile a list of the best (and mostly free!!). In no particular order:Ā
1. Codecademy [x]
I couldnāt not include Codecademy! Just in case you havenāt checked it out, itās pretty neat. It has courses for learning languages and web developer skills.
Languages: Python, Ruby, Java, PHP, jQuery, JavaScript, HTML/CSS
Extras: Git, SQL, Command Line, AngularJS, Ruby on Rails
2. Code School [x]
This is pretty similar to Codecademy with the in-browser coding and such. It also has additional features like teaching videos. A good introduction to programming languages.
Languages: Python, Ruby, Javascript, HTML/CSS
Extra: iOS development with Objective-C or Swift, Git, SQL
3. Learnaroo [x]
Has tutorials followed by mini challenges based on the concepts youāve just learnt! It also has some reference pages called āLearn x by Exampleā. Looks pretty good.
Languages: Python, Java, Ruby, HTML/CSS
Extra: Algorithms, Mathematics, + a bunch of premium membership stuff
4. Learn ā¦Ā
A set of related websites (see below) which have mini tutorials on language concepts followed by mini challenges, similar to Learnaroo.
Languages: Python, Java, C, C#, Ā JavaScipt, PHP, Shell
5. Code Combat [x]
Basically, it turns learning to code into a game! As you move through the levels, new concepts are introduced, so the code you need to write to play the game gets harder.Ā
Languages: Python, Java, JavaScript, CoffeeScript, Clojure, Lua
6. Codingame [x]
Similar idea to Code Combat, but a little more advanced.Ā
Languages: Python, Java, Ruby, C, C++, C#, Haskell, VB ⦠thereās actually loads it supports.
7. Code Wars [x]
This is more forĀ ātrainingā with a language you already know. It offers plenty of practice through challenges, so itās really good for improving your coding skills.Ā
Languages: Python, Ruby, Java, C#, Haskell, JavaScript, CoffeeScript, Clojure
8. Coderbyte [x]
This offers some video tutorials and challenges for a few languages, plus special courses on specific algorithms and bootcamp/interview prep. You need a premium membership for quite a lot of things, though (e.g. I donāt think you can watch any of the videos with a free membership).
Languages: Python, Ruby, JavaScript
Extras: Algorithms, Bootcamp Prep, Job Interview Prep
9. Free Code Camp [x]
Mini tutorials followed by mini challenges. Has a number of courses on the languages below!
Languages: HTML/CSS, jQuery, JavaScript
Extras: Git, Algorithms, + a bunch of projects to complete
10. Programmr [x]
Has courses to learn various languages through doing little exercises/challenges in the browser, similar to previous examples. Also hasĀ āzonesā for more languages, where you can find challenges, example code and projects people have shared.Ā
Languages: Python, Java, C++, C#, PHP, jQuery
11. CheckIO [x]
Only offers Python, but I still think itās really great. You move from level to level, getting challenges which are gradually trickier. Learn by doing!
12. Rails for Zombies [x]
For people who already know a bit of Ruby, but nothing about Ruby on Rails!Ā Each level begins with a short video followed by interactive challenges where you program Rails in the browser.
Thatās all (for now!) Hope this is helpful! (ļ¾^ā^)ļ¾ļ¾

I love all that you ladies do! I'm in a bad cycle: I used to work my butt off and kill it at work. I took a new job across the country a year and some change ago because it was a huge step forward, financially and career-wise, but since I moved I just haven't been able to focus or stay motivated. I want to kill it at work, and I know I can, but for some reason most days I find myself staring at my screen and idling. None of the tactics for focusing seem to stick. HELP!
Oh no! This sounds retched, puggle. So sorry youāre struggling with this.
Hereās the thing about focusing and productivity advice: itās not one size fits all. You need to try some different methods for periods of time before you figure out what works for you and that you can stick with. Trial and error takes time, of course, so be patient with yourself.
All else fails, weāll provide you with some terrifying motivation. If you come back, Iāll just screamĀ āDO THE THINGā over and over until it works. Thatās healthy and supportive, right?Ā

If you can lose money in. 401k or IRA, why is it better than a savings account? Especially during a recession?
Because of the ~*~power of compound interest~*~.
Right now my high-yield savings account with Ally Bank earns 2.2% APY (annual percentage yield⦠the amount of interest it accrues in a year). That interest will then be added to the total, and Iāll make interest on my interest. In other words, it compounds over time, making me richer.
My 401(k) and Roth IRA (investment accounts, essentially) earn much, MUCH higher interest. Like, over their lifetimes (about 10 years), theyāve each earned 9% APY on average (with the interest dipping as low as 4% sometimes and as high as 12% given how the stock market is doing at any given time). That interest compounds as well.
So even when my investments are doing poorly, theyāre STILL earning more interest than my savings. And even if I LOSE some money on my investments over time because of recessions and dips in the market, Iām still going to come out ahead because of all the compound interest Iāve earned over the life of the investments. Meanwhile, the savings account is perfectly safe and wonāt lose money⦠but for that safety I sacrifice the chance to make a LOT more money.
Allow me to turn to my favorite compound interest calculator!
Letās say I save $5,000 in a savings account at 2% interest, and invest another $5,000 in a 401(k), Roth IRA, or other form of investment account at 8% interest (settling on an average of 8% for the sake of this explanation, even though stock market interest expectations naturally vary). Hereās how the accounts will look over time:
Savings after 1 year: $5,100
Investments after 1 year: $5,400.00
Savings after 5 years: $5,520.40
Investments after 5 years: $7,346.64
Savings after 10 years: $6,094.97
Investments after 10 years: $10,794.62
And in that scenario, we didnāt even deposit more of our own money. We more than doubled our money within 10 years of investing on the power of compound interest ALONE. By contrast the savings account only earned about a grand. Now imagine if you kept investing more of your own money IN ADDITION to the compound interest.
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury⦠I DO NOT YET REST MY CASE! Because you asked about losing money in a recession. So letās play with the same numbers, but assuming that after 10 years a recession hits and my investments lose 4% (incidentally, that happened in 2018).
Savings after 10 years: $6,094.97
Investments after 10 years: $10,362.84
Ok ok letās say something REALLY FUCKING TRAGIC happens and I lose 12% of my investments at year 10. Hereās how that would look:
Savings after 10 years: $6,094.97
Investments after 10 years: $9,499.27
DO YA FEEL ME, SON? ARE YOU PICKING UP WHAT IāM PUTTING DOWN?
The investments still beat the savings. And you still come out WAY ahead of your initial investment.
And yes, Iām definitely simplifying things for the sake of education. Investment returns arenāt technically insured interest the way the money in a savings or checking account is. Theyāre dividends, and if something apocalyptic like the 2008 crash happens, investment firms can go under (like the Lehman Brothers), taking the entirety of your investments with them. The 2008 crash and subsequent recession was really fucking bad for a number of reasons outside of the stock investments of average people. But thatās not part of the usual life cycle of the stock market: the Great Depression of the 1930s and the Recession of 2008 were outliers. Weāre unlikely to suffer a similar crash for many many years to come. And I still hold that under normal circumstances, having an investment account of some kind IN ADDITION TO savings is necessary for your financial future.Ā
All of which is to say: no risk, no reward. Wise money managers will keep a healthy amount in a high yield savings account for safetyās sake⦠but keep the majority of their money in investments. If you want more details on how all this works out, hereās what weāve written:

So I have $11k in my savings account and Iām not sure if I should just let it sit there or invest some of it? Itās more than enough for a 6 month emergency fund so I feel like I need to do something with the extra. Investments and the stock market are like a foreign language to me though. Any advice? Thanks!
First things first, make sure youāre not just leaving it in a traditional savings account. Move the majority to a high yield savings account. More on that here:
Not Every Savings Account Is Created EqualĀ
Next, invest some of it! If a 6 months emergency fund is what you need to feel secure, put every dollar over that amount into an investment account. Specifically, move it to a Roth IRA or Traditional IRA if you donāt already have one. This is a retirement account and itās a very easy first step toward investing.Ā

4) we get excited when our date buys us an appetizer, we donāt even comprehend people buying us rocks that would force us into debt for ten years

Pro tip from a former Jaredās salesperson: You want a sparkly white rock that will look like a diamond to the untrained eye and will literally cost the price of a nice dinner for two? Created white sapphire. Theyāre lab grown and cost *pennies* to make, so you can get a 1 or 2 carat white sapphire for like⦠$30-80 probably. You can get one as huge as you like, perfectly clear, perfectly flawless. And no one will ever be able to tell the difference except a professional appraiser. Also, sapphires are the second-hardest gemstone (right after diamonds) so they are very durable! Very unlikely that theyāll chip or crack. Get that bitch set in sterling silver and you are GOOD TO GO. Whole thing should cost you less than $200 unless you get a fancy band with a lot of extra stones. Of course, created sapphires come in every color of the rainbow, so if you want something more exciting than plain white, you TOTALLY CAN.Ā

Pass along and use the shit out of them
when the capitalists die out either thru global warming or revolution will we be able to start homegrown internet
been reading about dual power and how to grow my own tomatoes and iām wondering how and if weāll be able to start commie internet lol
like obviously the internet is this huge electric capitalist controlled hardware infrastructure thing so after all that shuts down is there a way to do it ourselves lol
i want to come home from a hard day on the communal allotment, kiss my Wife, crank up my generator, and start sharing meams!
GOOD NEWS: the homegrown commie internet is in the works! Across the world, people fighting against censorship and for a more democratic internet are building mesh networks (meshnets) of long-range wifi (LoRa)
Since wifi is just a standard for sending data through radio waves, and radio waves can go a pretty long way if you use āem right, itās not that difficult to connect two computers by wifi from across town. Then you just keep adding more computers to the network and youāve got internet!
Small antennae, like for connecting across the neighborhood, can literally be built out of trash
And a larger, more accurate one can be built pretty cheap too
(You can also reuse an old satellite TV dish, or really anything else thatās roughly parabolic)
There are LoRa meshnets in places like New York, India, and all over Europe: Spain (pictured below), Greece, Austria, Germany, etc
As for sharing fresh mĆ«mĆŖs, the network to go to is Scuttlebutt. Unlike most social media, Scuttlebutt posts are stored on your computer and sent directly to your friendsā computers (rather than being stored on the cloud and sent to a central server). It works just fine over traditional internet, but you can also view and interact with it offline, and it has protocols for connecting over any means that two computers can share information - that includes LoRa, as well as hardwired connections, sneakernet (basically mailing a USB stick back and forth), etc
What that means is you always know that your info is just as safe as the network itās sent on and the computer that receives it - no one even theoretically has the ability to collect and sell it all. And, since itās all run on your computer, thereās no servers to go down or companies to go out of business that could destroy the whole thing
You can read more about this kind of stuff here (or here if itās cloudy in Barcelona)!
thereās also the work being done by the DCPT, left-behind Detroiters meshing together their neighborhoods to share overpriced high-speed connections among the community and producing these good good educational documents, especially this rad resource page. building meshnets to share a global uplink is very similar to building meshnets for the purpose of intracommunication and these resources are useful in both cases
Iāve had a couple people ask about how to join/organize something like this, which is great! The best list of active projects I know of is here, though you should also do a search online if you donāt see one in your area in case they missed it. For those without a nearby group, put a pin here and try contacting nearby pins as well - you can use the instructions on buildyourowninter.net as well as the DCPTās resources as linked above to get set up!
Please reblog this version so others can get involved!
OH MY GOD whyyyy did no one tell me youāre supposed to send thank-yous after interviews?? Why would I do that???
āThank you for this incredibly stressful 30 minutes that I have had to re-structure my entire day around and which will give me anxiety poos for the next 24 hours.ā
I HATE ETIQUETTE ITāS THE MOST IMPOSSIBLE THING FOR ME TO LEARN WITHOUT SOMEONE DIRECTLY TELLING ME THIS SHIT
NO ONE TOLD YOU???? WTF! I HAVE FAILED YOU. Also: Dear ______: Thank you so much for the opportunity to sit down with you (&________) to discuss the [insert job position]. I am grateful to be considered for the position. I think I will be a great fit at [company name], especially given my experience in __________. [insert possible reference to something you talked about, something that excited you.] I look forward to hearing from you [and if you are feeling super confident: and working together in the future]. Sincerely, @mellivorinae
THIS IS A LIFESAVING TEMPLATE
YOU ARE WELCOME
My brother got a really great paid internship one summer. The guy who hired him said the deciding factor was the professional thank you letter my brother sent after the interview.
should it be an email? or like a physical letter?
email, you want to send it within a few hours at max after the interview if you can so itās fresh in their mind who you are.Ā
Confirmed! I interviewed for a job right after arriving in NY. The interview went incredibly well, and I went home and immediately wrote a thank you letter and put it in the mail. I had a super good feeling about this interview.
I didnāt get the job.
However, a few weeks later, I was called in to interview with another editor in the same company, and I did get that job. I found out later from the initial editor (the one who didnāt hire me) that he had planned to offer me the job, but since I didnāt follow up with a thank you letter, he assumed I didnāt really want it. He offered the job to another contenderābut when he got my letter in the mail shortly after the offer had already been made, he went to HR and gave me a glowing recommendation. It was based on that recommendation that I got called in for the second interview.
So: send an email thank you immediately (same day!) after the interview. If youāre feeling extra, go ahead and send a written one too. OR go immediately to a coffee shop, write the letter, and return to the office and give it to the secretary.
Either way, those letters are important.
Pro tip: If you really want HR to develop a personal interest in your application, publicly thank them on linkedin. Just make a short post telling your network about how X recruiter really went above and beyond to make you feel welcome, or about how be accommodating and professional they were, or whatever. Make sure to use the mention feature so theyāll get a notification and see it.Ā
Flattery will get you everywhere⦠and public flattery that might make its way back to their manager, doubly so.
Obligatory plug for one of FreePrintable.netās sites: ThankYouLetter.ws. They have a whole section with interview thank you letter templates, and a page with specific tips for interview thank you letters. (There are also tons of other letter templates if you browse around a bit.)
As a former professional recruiter and recruiting manager, I confirm, especially for entry-level positions, where you are competing with oodles of people. This little thing can make a difference. Also the fact that, maybe, you took time to google the āinterview etiquetteā.
SIGNAL BOOST
The post-interview thank you notes can be a good way to recover in case you got asked a question whose answer you either didnāt know or felt was super weak. So if you follow the above given template, jump in with something likeĀ āupon further thought to your question, hereās my revised answer.āĀ
But yeah always send a thank you note after an interview. Itās a small thing but it makes a hell of a difference. And def send thank you messages to any recruiters who may have helped. And also after you get the job. Small things like that really go a long long way.
Holy shit I had no idea
blankets make him so happyĀ

remember, this is for a DOOR lock.
remember that when picking a DOOR lock, you have to apply a little bit of pressure to your tension wrench (the thing that you use to turn the knob). too little or too much and you wont be able to pick the door open. you can use anything for the tension wrench. a bobby pin. bits of wire. a paper clip. etc.
its best to be completely silent when youre picking locks bc theres this smallĀ āclickā when youre picking that you might miss if youre using headphones or listening to music.
.
if youre picking one of these
you jam something thin and long above one of the rotation dials and you push up on the shackle.
. if its one of these
you get yourself some shims. (or make one. you can make shims out of fucking soda cans), you wiggle them in the tiny space between the shackle and the body of the lock, and you pop these suckers open.
. for a chain deadbolt,
you get something flexible but sturdy and you just push this fucker down
. for one of these rotating combination locks
you can also shim this motherfucker open. jam your shims between the shackle and the body and pry it unlocked. if, for some reason, you dont wanna shim it open, maybe you dont have a shim or you just like a challenge, this bitch can be decoded ridiculously easy. heres what you do:
spin this bitch to the right about two or three times toĀ āresetā it. then you pull up on the shackle a bit, and turn it right slowly until you hear a click. your number is two spaces further. then you turn left 360 degrees until you land on the right number again, and start turning this motherfucker left until it stops. when it stops, turn right. if its loose, its the wrong number, keep going left. if its not loose, you have the right number, and you turn right all the way until this bitch pops
.
now you know how to pick several common locks!!!!! congratulations!!!!
donāt mind me im just reblogging
Yall need to look up the Lock Picking Lawyer on YouTube too, heās amazing.
His videos are always so blazĆ©, like āhereās yet another fucking disappointing lock to pickā and heās so good.

Hi! Through some judicious financial kung fu my boyfriend and I have managed to accumulate an emergency nest egg of about $35k. It's currently in a HISA making 1.3% but we have no idea how to level up our savings while coronavirus rages. CDs have rates like half of our savings account and everyone says this is a bad time to get into stock. What are our options? Just sit tight? Thanks!!
Hey kid! This is a fantastic question. And we answer it a bit here:
Ask the Bitches Pandemic Lightning Round: "Is This the Right Time to Start Investing?"Ā
Keep in mind that thereās nothing wrong in sitting on savings to invest at a later date. My Ally HISA currently has a bucket labeledĀ āinvest later,ā and when the market is slightly less volatile, Iāll move that big lump sum into a brokerage account. But for now itās fine earning a little interest in the HISA.
(Also note that Iām still investing money as well... just at my normal rate while the extras are waiting to be invested.)
Hope that helps! And for everyone wondering about the acronyms:
How to Level Up Your Financial Savings: From HISAs to CDsĀ
Hi Bitches! Iām only 20 years old, so I know this is unrealistic, but my greatest wish in life is to own a teeny tiny cottage somewhere with a garden. I donāt even care where in the world I have to live to make it happen š Like I said: unrealistic. I know that I probably wonāt get my little cottage for a long time. All the same, I know absolutely nothing about how to work towards that goal, so do you have any advice for a young aspiring homeowner? How does buying a house even work? Thank you!
We answered this delightful question on Fridayās episode of the Bitches Get Riches podcast! Check it out here, babycakes:
Season 2, Episode 2: āIām Not Ready to Buy a HouseāBut How Do I *Get Ready* to Get Ready?āĀ
