I love the scene of their dialogue and all this backgrounds with light andΒ stained glass windows. It just makes me feel so sad to think that they really could be allies and even friends from the beginning, and Mello would feel much more peacefulΒ They just need each other *crying*Β β¦.and do you know what else do they need? Runaway verse
Mello closes the van door harder than heβd intended to. He takes a deep breath and centers himself after the door thunks shut. He glances at Matt. The gun is heavy in his pocket. Should he use it yet or wait to see what happens? His adrenaline rush starts to drop and Mello shivers. And wrinkles his nose - ugh nice, itβs cold and smells of old takeout and cigarettes in here.
He skims through Mattβs thoughts, searching for any hint of violent intent. Thereβs none of course, just like there hasnβt been the entire week Melloβs tailed him. He knows the sad fuck next to him is harmless. He almost wishes he wasnβt. It makes Mello feel sick but he wants an excuse to use his powers. Needs to let loose. Not yet. No need to go escalating things and reveal his trump card. Anyway, Mello thinks with a twist in his gut, thereβs time enough for that down the line.
βSo whatβs the plan?β Mello raises his eyebrows in question. He perches on the edge of the unmade bed crammed into the rear of the van, and forces himself to lean back into a more comfortable position.
Matt is already kneeling in front of his mini fridge to get them both a can of beer when she closes the door. In his experience the first minute of getting a girl into his van is the most important - if they donβt get something out of it very fast they will leave. And this case doesnβt seem very unusual in that sense. If he had enough money he would have pushed the idea of a hotel room more (although she didnβt seem too keen on the idea when Matt mentioned it which seems very strange considering how cold she now acts out of nowhere).
βUh, the plan,β he starts with a lopsided grin, turning around with the beer cans to face Mello, βwould be tryina enjoy some refreshments while we wait for the van to warm up a bit I guess.β He hands one of the cans to her and crosses his legs, staying on the floor while opening his can. βI can put some music on . Whatβs your fav genre?β
Mello hesitates for a split second. Not wanting to break character yet he accepts the proffered can. He immediately cracks it open and takes a sip to stall answering. Ugh it tastes like someone took a permanent dive into a vat of acid. Mello keeps the can pressed to his mouth and bites at it in lieu of spitting out the foul liquid. Heβs conscious of his pounding heart. He knows Matt canβt hear it and itβs just paranoia but itβs getting louder and the van is too quiet even with the heating thatβs begun pinging to life. Music is a good idea. Itβs been a while since he last heard the radio, or was up to date with a whole lot of shit, thanks to his βfatherβ and his time down in the labs. Classic heavy metal is probably not the best option right now. Better play it safe.
βEh, just whatever. You choose. Donβt make it lame.β
This will need to be taken care of before the second beer. He did not get this far just to get fucked over by low alcohol tolerance. Mello searches for something to say and ends up taking another sip of his beer-cum-acid instead.
Matt shrugs as a response to Melloβs reply and, after finishing a swig of beer (and after some technical difficulties - why are his pockets so tight?) fishes his phone out of his pocket.
βCanβt make promises since I currently dunno whatβs considered lame,β he replies, shooting an accusatory glance to her direction before grinning.
Couple of swipes on his phone later the surround system in his van comes to life with house music. Couple of more swipes and the bass has come down from the level where you can feel your heart rate matching the beat. Mattβs grin turns more apologetic.
ββ¦.If itβs not to your liking just lemme know and Iβll swap it for something different.β And looks at her again, or her legs, considering those are more on his eye level. βI like your shoes.β
Mello jolts and the beer can almost slips from his fingers. The crunch of aluminum is barely audible over the music as Mello tightens his grip before the can falls completely. He shoots Matt a death glare. It feels good to let some of his emotions out, however small. At least his heart rate has an excuse for the next few minutes.
Mattβs comment brings Mello's attention crashing back to his sore feet. Heβd forgotten about his newly acquired blisters for a while there. He needs to buy trainers or something else new that isnβt going to goddamn hurt this much. His plans donβt involve running but shit happens. He needs to be better prepared. Mello pushes past the need to unzip his boots and rub away the biting itchiness there.
βMh thanks.β He replies absently. Mello takes a moment to properly take stock of the van. The stale smells either arenβt as bad as he first thought or heβs already growing accustomed to them. He really hopes itβs the former. The interior is smaller than heβd envisioned, with barely any amenities. Just a cramped bed and stove and some storage space. Itβs manageable though. No oneβs going to be suspecting this small a vehicle, so heβll deal with the drawbacks as they come. Speaking of drawbacks. Mello looks down at his escape ticket. He takes another swig of beer. Might as well harvest all the info he can while the guy is still chatty.
βThe music is passable. So,β Mello offers a half smile and gestures with his free hand, βhowβs living like this?β

Matt gives an exaggerated sigh and an eyeroll before finally replying.
βFucking Hell, Mello. Near is not stupid, I canβt not say anything. Iβm tryina do you a favour for godβs sake, can you for fucking once work with me here.β His voice gets increasingly strained by the end of his comment and Matt takes a deep breath, tries to calm down.
Theyβre not friends. Not anymore. Still, for some reason, Matt keeps on forgetting about it until Mello drags him back to reality. Matt takes the phone out of his pocket, places it in the cup holder between them, almost like a threat.
And out of spite Matt swirls the steering wheel faster than he needs to when taking his next turn, makes sure Mello is not getting any comfort he doesnβt deserve. The silence stretches between them until Matt opens his mouth again.
βThe feelingβs mutual,β he mutters back quietly.
Near should really pull him out this goddamn case.
cocoaslayer
Mattβs voice is a low buzz under the wind rushing in his ears. Mello closes his eyes. If itβs important Matt will tell him later. His face is turning numb but itβs worth it to feel his stomach settle a bit.
Then thereβs the screech of tires and Mello is thrown forward. His chin bangs on the edge of the window. He scowls and pulls his head back inside.
βWhat the fucking hell, asshole?β He almost shouts.
Mello rubs his smarting face. What the fuck was that for? Is this seriously about Near? He hadnβt taken Matt for that much of an ass kissing bossβs pet.
βTell him whatever. Youβre smart enough to keep it simple.β
He snatches Mattβs phone from the holder and pockets it.
βOne more swerve like that and youβll be doing some shopping tonight.β
Melloβs reaction makes Matt smirk, the satisfaction of getting something out of the asshole more fulfilling than he expects. Matt half shrugs when Mello makes his threat.
βYou expecting I did that on purpose,β he lies, nonchalant, but takes the next turn more calmly.
Itβs not that he doesnβt have other ways of contacting Near. However, anything else than a text and Near would already be suspicious. Matt glances at Mello through the mirror and immediately regrets his decision.
Mello is a damn mess, the blood from his nose smeared all over his face and the clothes dirty from the fight. Matt clings onto the anger thatβs been keeping his adrenaline levels high - he canβt afford to start worrying about Mello.
βIf I were you I wouldnβt be makinβ any threats. Youβre injured and Iβm the one behind the fuckinβ wheel. Keep your goddamn head down, Mello.β And Matt hates how it comes out almost like a plea but Melloβs smarter than this and fuck if Matt is ever going to want to hear about the bastard getting his stupid ass killed.Β Β
The traffic is getting awful which is a sign of them approaching the borough. Matt runs his hand through his hair and sighs.
βWhere from here?β
Mello texts Louise to give her a heads up. The screen keeps goddamn blurring but, jabbing at his stupid phone, he finally manages. He mumbles her address to Matt. Mattβs starting to sound muffled. Distantly Mello knows it must be his concussion setting in. But. Whatever. Mattβs just talking nonsense. Heβs always talking nonsense.
He pillows his head on his arm, folded onto the windowsill edge. The wind ruffles his hair, all cool and soothing.
βS all fine.β He says into his sleeve.
----------------------------------------------
Tires screech in the near distance. It isnβt followed by the familiar wail of a police siren or three. That will probably be Mello then. Louise groans and puts down her freshly brewed coffee. From his text she thought sheβd have another fifteen minutes. So much for her caffeine prep.
Louise buzzes them in and heads for the liquor cabinet. She pauses. Melloβs going to be in a bad way if theyβve had a run in. She grabs his favourite - the expensive bastard - and pours him a glass of her 18 year old High Park. Company, heβd said. Sheβll wait and see what his acquaintance wants. A beer would probably do - itβll be one of his grunts. Strange Melloβs brought one with him though. She grumbles loudly and cards a hand through her hair. Fuckssake that means he canβt even drive. Sheβs going to beat his ass into last week.
My brain: New story idea!! Must write now!
Me: okayβ¦ whatβs the plot..?
My brain: Hmm, plot? No, no, no, none of that here, my good friend, my good sir, my good maβam, but may I offer you an overall general Vibe, an aesthetic if you will, a vague feeling to convey, a-
