A person is by no means identical with the material structures of his or her body, but is a construct of the interaction between body and environment. A person is partly body, certainly, but is also partly environment […] The world outside extends its social institutions and practices into ‘me’: 'I’ am the hatched area which is neither body nor world, but a complex interaction of both.

To account for the inarticulate distress of someone trying to understand and give a coherent picture of the misery he or she feels, one will always refer back in the end to features either of human biology or of the environment(s) in which those biological processes are or were once taking place. 

A human body abstracted from its environment is not a person: it is merely a collection of all the biological bits and pieces which go to make up bodies. A person only comes into being when a body is placed in a social world which interacts with it.
