On the morning of November 7th, 2007, Ismo, Pekka's father was at home with his sons while on holiday from work as a railwayman. Mikaela, Pekka’s mother, had already left for work at the hospital.

Pekka’s younger brother had left for school first, followed by Pekka, whose morning had been ordinary, down to fixing his hair.

The shooting reportedly began at approximately 11:40 a.m., when he killed his first victim before taking the lives of eight others and turning the gun on himself.

Later that day, his father received a call from Pekka’s friend from school, asking if Pekka was home and if his gun could be found at the house. His father said he had been shocked at that moment, wondering what gun the person was talking about, as he had no idea Pekka even owned a gun in the first place, but apparently his friends at school had already found out about it.

“Pekka had already been talking about it at school,” his mother said.

“He had purchased the gun the previous Friday and took the receipt with him, and you found it,” she stated, pointing to Ismo.

“I found it in the boys’ room, in the desk drawer,” Ismo started. “Then I decided to go and look through his room again, and then I found the last letter left to us by Pekka. It was placed in front of the desktop in a way where it read ‘Father, mother and brother’, and then I turned it around and read it, and then I went into a state of shock.”

From an early age, Adam exhibited developmental challenges and was diagnosed in preschool with sensory processing disorder, a condition that affects how the brain processes sensory information such as sights, sounds, smells, and tastes.

He had communication difficulties and repetitive behaviors, and did not speak until he was three years old. By the age of five, he began to exhibit obsessive-compulsive behaviors, such as repetitive handwashing, changing socks up to 20 times a day, and using large amounts of tissues because he could not have direct contact with doorknobs with his bare hands.

At 14, Adam was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), as well as depression and anxiety, all of which can significantly affect quality of life.

When evaluated at the Yale Child Study Center in New Haven, Connecticut, his parents were told that without proper treatment, his mental health could deteriorate. This prompted Adam’s father, Peter, to attempt to get him treatment, but Adam resisted and disagreed with the diagnoses, according to a report.

At the Yale Child Study Center, he was prescribed the antidepressant Celexa (citalopram), but the side effects were so strong that he had to stop taking it. A report from the Office of the Child Advocate found that Yale’s recommendations for extensive special education supports, expert consultations, and therapy were not followed by the family.

The report also stated that Adam reportedly had no contact with mental health providers after 2006, which may have contributed to his ongoing mental health difficulties. Just a few years after cutting contact with mental health providers, his mother also withdrew him from high school, because she was unhappy with the district’s plans for her son.

In 2008, Pekka’s parents reached out to the Finnish broadcaster MTV3 for a potential interview. MTV3 agreed to host them on an episode of 45 minuuttia (45 Minutes), a well-known investigative journalism program that was popular in Finland at the time for featuring in-depth interviews with people connected to major news events.

The episode was very successful, reaching around 1.2 million viewers at its peak. During the interview, they were asked about Pekka’s behavior, which his parents recalled.

The interviewer asked: “Did he ever show signs of anger or any sort of idealization of violence?”

“I can’t say that I noticed,” his father responded.

“Not in the way he acted, at least, no. Pekka had an extremely calm personality and seemed to be happy most of the time. Whenever we were in contact with the school and spoke with the teachers and principal, they always gave us positive feedback about him. It gave us the impression that he was a very good and talented student, which he probably was. He was well-behaved and positive in every way,” his mother recalled.

After the incident, she said she realized there had been small changes in Pekka-Eric’s behavior that may have been early signs of what was to come.

• Starve off the parts you don’t need. They’re ugly and they drag you down.

• Nothing cant be fixed with hunger and weight loss.

• Have you ever seen a person NOT notice a walking skeleton.

• Nothing tastes as good as thin feels.

• ls food more important that happiness in life? | think not!

• Eating is conforming to everyone else’s expectations.

• Hunger is your friend and it won't betray you like food.

• Food is mean and sneaky. It tricks you into eating it and it works on you from the inside out making you fat, bloated, ugly and unhappy.

• Thin people look good in ANY kind of clothes.

• Food rots your teeth.

• Puffy cheeks, double chins and thick ankles— aren't attractive.

• Fatty areas stretch and sag as you get older.

• Ever seen the arms of a fat person wave hello or goodbye?

• Eating little to nothing saves you money!

• Big people sweat more and they smell bad. • Fat people die earlier.

• You'll be the envy of all the other girls.

• All of the guys will want you.

• You won't be exposed to all the chemicals and pesticides they put in food today.

He could’ve been a U.S. marine, but was disqualified from enlisting due to the anti-depressants he was taking at the time

His life ended just a few days later, at 18 years old
