On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens in Washington State erupted in one of the most powerful volcanic events in U.S. history. The cataclysmic eruption was triggered by 5.1 magnitude earthquake, after weeks of seismic activity in the area. The blast sent ash, gas, and rock over 80,000 feet into the atmosphere, triggering a massive landslide and devastating hundreds of miles of forest The explosion would tragically claim 57 lives and reshaped the surrounding landscape in the region. The event remains a landmark in geological event and a stark reminder of nature’s immense power. These striking photos were captured by hiker John V. Christiansen from nearby Mount Adams, about 37 miles away, at the exact moment the volcano erupted on May 18, 1980, at 8:32 AM. They were later published in National Geographic magazine the following year.

Mendenhal Glacier, Juneau, Alaska, 2025.
Having seen Glacier Bay a few days earlier, revisiting Mendenhal after 50 years was a little disappointing. It has clearly retreated since 1974 when I had last seen it.

USGS photo of Takhoma (Mount Rainier) viewed from the crater rim of Lawelat'la (Mt. St. Helens).
There are many Native American stories about the nature of the mountain. This is one told by Archie Iyall of the Cowlitz Tribe, 1974:
"Once in the long ago time Xwa’ni was going up the Sequiku (Toutle River), and he heard a great rumbling. He perked up his ear and soon realized that it was Lawelat’la (Mount St. Helens). He could tell that she was very angry. Soon he heard another great rumbling coming from another direction. He perked up his other ear and soon realized that this was Takhoma (Mount Rainier). He was also very angry. They were having a husband and wife argument and fight, and he was in between them. Then he saw Lawelat’la blow her top and knock the head off of her husband Takhoma."
