"Where does it hurt?"

Rope, plaster, and images

This piece titled "Where does it hurt?" was created to highlight my struggles with fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition characterized by sudden onset of widespread pain. I used a combination of plaster, rope, and images to create this piece. The body parts cast were my knee, elbow, foot, and hand. To supplement body casts I used MRI images of my own body. Each image represents a doctor's appointment or time in my life when I was asked "Where does it hurt?" I chose to display them as one would display happy memories printed on Polaroids. This gives the piece a lighter feel but also shows how trapped I feel as the rope is wrapped around the casts.

The Illusion of Childhood Ignorance

My goal for this piece was to create a visual link between the feeling of childhood ignorance and the tension of keeping the harsh reality out. The materials used in this piece include rebar, muslin fabric, newspaper, twine, a lantern, and two teddy bears.

The muslin fabric was chosen because of its light color which allows for light to pass through it also had a khaki-like color which was neutral. The newspapers are current and include information about covid and the war in Ukraine. By using the teddy bears and the lights inside I was able to create a shadow of the bear. The shadow serves as a symbol of childhood. The light represents the purity and innocence of childhood.

The viewers will be able to make connections between the two worlds. This piece will evoke mixed feelings of joy, purity, sadness, and anxiety.
