If you have AWS CloudTrails auditing enabled, you might occasionally see this in your logs:

No, it's not the NSA hacking into your account. This happens when someone (perhaps you) attempts to login to the AWS Control Panel using your account number, but the attempted name doesn't exist in the account number.

One reason it may be hidden is because if someone mistakenly types your account number instead of theirs, it would be a security violation for Amazon to reveal their account names to you.

Bug: XQuartz and OSX Mavericks, with multiple monitors and spaces, lose windows off-desktop, never to return. This bug has been around around forever, is easily-reproducible, and returns in every OSX; Apple doesn't support XQuartz and it's a hard problem. Most workarounds cause you to lose your work, use fragile tricks, disable features (like Separate Spaces), only affect new windows or apps that can gather their own windows (InkScape), and overall advise being more careful and abandon recovery. But you're here because you've got data to save and you want your lost windows back, right? These steps are scriptable.

The Setup

Two monitors arranged vertically, multiple OSX spaces and desktops, and a program that doesn't gather windows (Wireshark, but anything will do). Let's knock a window offscreen. Start Wireshark (imagine a running capture for "resource depletion + can't save" urgency), switch away to OSX, then disconnect the second monitor, put your system to sleep, or just work in OSX. When you return, your windows are gone and XQuartz will place most new windows in the void. Go ahead and try recovering them; the blog can wait.

Getting Visibility

If you can't wait, put XQuartz into full-screen mode. Optionally start an X11 terminal; this helps focus the right Space when XQuartz additionally becomes invisible:

Switch to XQuartz using the OSX task switcher or the Dock icon.

If nothing happens (XQuartz is invisible then), try Cmd+Alt+A (full screen). Still nothing: Click on the other monitor's desktop (where XQuartz was not previously running). Do not click where the XQuartz desktop might be. You may have to do this more than once, but one of your monitors should then show the X11 menu.

Select Toggle Full Screen from the X11 menu.

From the dock icon, select Applications, then Terminal.

You should now see an X11 terminal (if not, Mission Control often shows it). Mission Control may also now show you the lost windows, which you are now going to recover.

Note, it might work to drag them to a new Space and delete that Space.

Reclamation

Get XQuartz into full-screen mode, above.

From an OSX or XQuartz terminal, install the Window Manager Controller:

$ brew install wmctrl ==> Downloading http://tomas.styblo.name/wmctrl/dist/wmctrl-1.07.tar.gz

Get a window list with geometries:

$ /usr/local/bin/wmctrl -G -l WindowID Desktop XPos YPos SizeX SizeY ClientMachine WindowTitle 0x006000a5 0 -673 -1396 2560 1418 local Capturing from Wi-Fi: en0 [Wireshark 1.10.7... 0x00c0000d 0 641 458 1192 589 local xterm

Wireshark is off the XQuartz desktop at (-673, -1396). Return it to XQuartz desktop:

$ /usr/local/bin/wmctrl -r Wireshark -e 0,0,0,100,100

Wireshark appears at position (0,0) with size (100,100).

Don't switch away again or it gets weird. Just save your work and restart XQuartz.

By the way, recovery by title is often easier but you can also use the "interpret window as number" switch (-i), substituting the first column for -r:

When starting a debug session for a newly-created LoginActivity project in Android Studio (AS) 0.8.11, on OSX Mavericks, the default activity is not created. AS detects this and presents a dialog (but only once) where you may select LoginActivity as the activity to launch, which then doesn't create the Intent.

Launch fails with a vague hint (is it security, related to the null, something exported or a conflict with the debugger?): Waiting for device. Target device: (hardware name) Uploading file      local path: (apk)      remote path: (/data/local/tmp/appname) Launching application: ... java.lang.SecurityException: Permission Denial: starting Intent { act=android.intent.action.MAIN } cat=[android.intent.category.LAUNCHER] ... from null ... not exported from uid ... at android.os.Parcel.readException(Parcel.java:...) ... Warning: debug info can be unavailable. Please close other application using ADB: Monitor, DDMS, Eclipse Restart ADB integration and try again Waiting for process: (app name) It waits forever and the app doesn't launch. To resolve, edit your new application's manifest.xml and add (to the application's activity tag; the one with android:name="...LoginActivity"):             <intent-filter>                 <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />                 <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />             </intent-filter>

A vast multitude of posts about this issue in various forms exist on StackOverflow (example). The lesson in all of them is: the build system has to launch something (once you stub your toes on this a few times, you wonder why the project generator misses it, so it's a bug). The other reported issues, including the recommendation to restart ADB, are superfluous.
