I’d been on the fence about whether to make any kind of open announcement for this while I’ve been working on it, but given recent events it’s probably best to just lay it out there.
I had been collaborating with MadDogAirPirate over several years to make a story about Weylen Wolf. It’s a good story that is still available to read, you can check it out here.
Ultimately some differences were had and he and I are no longer working together on that story, but I wanted to continue writing about Weylen. So, for the sake of cleanliness and loose ends, I have been in the process of rebooting the entire thing from scratch. Any character that wasn’t fully mine has been replaced or removed entirely, key factors have been changed, and the drive of the story will be different.
The new story is called Southpaw. It will be strongly based on my home town and my direct experiences growing up. Some events will be made up while others may well be almost word-for-word pulled from my life. There have been and will be hints as to if some events are things that actually happened to me.
Darwyn, Ichitro and Weasel will still be present. Ichitro and Weasel will have the same exact jobs as physical education teachers. Darwyn will still be a teacher, but he will not be teaching science. The collection of weasel students are also mine and aside from their names they could remain the same, but I’ll likely change their appearances just to keep it clean. I have a number of backgrounders who had never actually been introduced yet, so they’re still good to go. Beyond that most characters have gone through a change of some kind. Either a name and appearance change, a total replacement, or complete removal.
This includes Weylen’s father. He is now Wade Wolf and has a different appearance and job. He is a carpenter. And Weylen digs hanging around his workshop.
I am currently working on a teaser that I’m going to use to launch a patreon purely for support for the reboot. It’ll be roughly 3 minutes long, inked, maybe flat colored. It’s a lot of work for one guy.
It’ll start out as a written story with still images and short animations laced in, but the more support it gets, the more I can put toward animating for it. So less writing and more visuals. Maybe even make it an episodic sort of thing if there’s enough support.
Anyway, there you go. Southpaw is Weylen’s life rebooted. It won’t be the same kind of story, but I think people will appreciate it regardless.
And he does have a mom now.
