This person gets it. That it. Thatâs Clark. Thatâs the *entire* point of Clark.
Hollywood can have Batman and all the rest of it, but this is why Superman still makes sense to anyone whoâs interested in modern history and isnât a whining âheâs so good, good is so boring!â out-of-date edgelord. When Michael Chabon wrote: ââSuperman, you donât think heâs Jewish?â Sammy asked Joe. âComing over from the old country, changing his name like that. Clark Kent, only a Jew would pick a name like that for himself.ââââ
He was calling back to the fears and hopes that Supermanâs Jewish creators poured into their character in a fascist world, and until those fears go away and those hopes are realised, their vision will matter.

I love the generational gap between emoji usage. Anyone over 50 sees đ and thinks "silly time! whee đ", whereas the rest of us immediately hear, verbatim, "they ask you how you are, and you just have to say that you're fine, when you're not really fine, but you just can't get into it because they would ne--"

Historian: How long do you think the Middle Ages lasted?
Fantasy Writer: 8000 years?
Historian: âŚ
Fantasy Writer: 10,000 years?
Historian: âŚ
Fantasy Writer: All I know are knights and lords and stone castles, please donât be mean to me.
Absolutely NOTHING funnier than a world that doesnât have ANY technological advances in thousands of years. Plumbing? Never heard of it. Electricity? You mean the stuff I shoot from my fingertips? What are light bulbs? Weâve lived in squalor since time immemorial and we donât plan on stopping
*cough* elder scrolls *cough*
Elder Scrolls? I thought this was about Westeros
Itâs not even that technology didnât change. You have literally the same families sitting on the same titles for thousands of years. Everywhere.
Even the real middle ages had technological progress, like thereâs a world of difference between the 9th and the 15th century
I was thinking of Westeros, but it applies to a lot of fantasy worlds.
To the point there if I see a fantasy setting with an equivalent to the Renaissance or industrial revolution itâs worthy of praise.
People in the tags talking about âpoeâ and Iâm like:
Also, I donât buy the âmagic will cause technological stagnationâ argument.
Like, maybe it will cause stagnation in physical technologies that exist in the real world (like electricity, modern medicine, and firearms), but it wouldnât stop innovation and experimentation.
As long as curiosity and needs exist, inquisitive people will explore what can be done to meet those needs. Progress will be made. It might be made with runes and cosmic energies instead of chemistry and petri dishes, but it will be made.
this applies to star wars too, change my mind
This was absolutely a factor in why so many people were upset that Legend of Korra had plane, more advanced ships, cars, radios, etc. They assumed that the world of Avatar the Last Airbender would remain stagnant for the sequel even though there were technological advancements in AtLA and while they werenât as big as the ones between AtLA and LoK, they also happened within a year in canon.
Sure the giant robot in LoK is still a bit weird, but you canât tell me no one in this world wouldnât make a giant robot if they had magic on their side that made it way easier.
It took just 66 years between the first powered flight and humans landing on the moon.
It took ~50 years or less between homes starting to use electricity for the first time and the atomic bomb being theorized, constructed, and utilized.
The internet as we know it has existed for ~25 years but look at how much our lives revolve around (and sometimes depend on) it.
Cell phones 15 years ago had physical buttons, the Razrâs 1.2MP camera that could also record video was a big deal, and the only time youâd connect to the internet was if you were well-off or accidentally hit the internet button and mashed buttons to cancel it before you were charged an obscene amount of money. (and even then it was bad and kinda useless because even back then the internet was not meant to be displayed on a tiny screen)
Whether itâs technology, magitech, or some other little innovation that on its own doesnât do much but allows for others to build off of, it will happen. And thatâs not even going into the artistic eras that would happen over a period of decades, centuries, and millennia even if tech hasnât changed much.
Thatâs also not even going into fibre crafts or cooking. If someone figures out a better way to knit or weave something, discovers a new dye or finds a way to replicate a known dye more affordably/vibrantly/give it more staying power, or comes up with a new dish that becomes popular, that will absolutely ripple outwards and affect society and culture.
If youâre writing something where the culture and technology is stagnant, you absolutely have to have an idea for why that is. Even âBecause itâs my story and I didnât want to have to think about itâ is better than shrugging but donât get mad when people ask you questions about it. Not everything has to happen rapidly but something should be going on that shows yours is a world that is changing.
